Some people might just want to drink their beer and do not care about the trading/Beer Street Journal nonsense? Granted it's likely a minority of folks though.

Guy in front of me at the cash register in Whole Foods Lincoln Park snagged both a coffee and a prop on first pass through despite the one variant limit. He got called out by several people still in line, most vocally by a middle aged man who I later saw complaining to a manager about it, but still was able to buy them.

Funny thing is I've seen this situation play out with both of these guys before.

That is very odd. Like some sort of Slippin' Jimmy diversion con

Good for you, I appreciate people that don't buy limited shit they probably won't want. A couple years back I passed on a 4-pack of Reg at Binny's (Black Friday; my girlfriend and I both got an allocation, so I figured I didn't need to hoard). The lady at the register did a double-take and asked me why I wasn't getting it.

@Jaycase already covered it, but a lot of us just drink the beer. I'll trade if it's absolutely necessary (something I desperately want, and I've got something worth trading away), but I typically never include trading as a reason to purchase beer. I have a bottle of Coffee from this year that I'm considering trying to include in trade for a bottle of Benthic, but that's partially just because I figure a lot of people missed out on BCBCS and enjoy it more than I do (I traded away my last bottle of KBS for the same reason).

I have no problem with people who trade, but it's definitely not on my mind when I buy beer.

I also grabbed a Coffee over Prop this morning myself because.... Wait for it... I like it more!

I know I know... It's bizzare because I wasn't thinking whalez tradez bro and instead went with the selfish choice of choosing something I actually plan on drinking myself.

No issue with trading, but if other people like Prop more it's fair to let those people have that option instead of picking it myself just so I can trade it.

Quick WF update: At De Paul they had about 2 cases each variant and was 7th in line when I got there at 5:30. At about 8:30 they were still handing out variants and there were about 20~30 people in line. Might still be able to get BW or Prop. Not 100% sure though. They are going to tap coffee at 6.

LP only has regular and are selling them by the case. So plenty of that if anyone is interested.

Trading is cool, and if you get beer just to trade that makes sense. In that regard you're still sharing the love. Example: I can't get this beer in IL and it's super hard for you to get my beer in FL so let's make this work so we can both enjoy beer we might not otherwise get to drink. The definition of hoarding and being an angel is so fine that if you put in the time to wait in line and just enjoy the company of others have like 2 Pop and half a case of Regular is ok. I've said it before, I don't like the fact that Coffee is now the new rare so drinking a bottle is like having the last beer in your life.

Prop was great this year, and even better last year IMHO. When I had it on draft I could tell what they were going for but thought; yeah, in about 6 months this will be killer! I think GI makes all of their BC beers hot and expect people to drink them later in the year but don't advertise it as such. I'm still holding on to some of my collection to trade 4 the BA Malevolence. That is a fucking awesome beer and is this year's prop done 'right' (I say this as a lack of better words, but take my word for it, it's amazing).

It's just shitty when you drive around in your car, following delivery trucks, and buying all you can and selling well past what it's worth. Honestly I've seen less of that and have worked some time in craft beer.

Once again, don't think prop is bad in any sense just think prop is the experimentale version that randomly gets hyped. People hated 15 prop but I think it stands tall with the older versions.

Like I've said before; as long as there's ultra hype for a beer there's bandwagon hate that takes smalls criticisms amd make them sound like it's the worst thing since liquid shit.

Either way, have a good haul and will be enjoying all my BCS like I have for the last couple of years.

    Cheers!

To the Coffee vs. Prop point, I have struggled with that over the past week as well. I ended up choosing a Coffee over Prop last night at Crown Liquors, after having a glass of Prop on tap again there and deciding it really isn't something totally up my alley. I was going to make the same choice this morning at DePaul WF, which leads me to the interesting story at that location.

I stopped in yesterday to get something at that WF and wanted to verify information in person with the beer guy. I found out that they open now at 8 (not 7, which is what everyone saw on FB) and he also said you could buy one of each variant and 4 regular. I was skeptical that would really play out since it seemed to be a corporate edict that everyone do 1 variant and 2 regular. This morning in line, I think I was just about the only one that knew the store opened at 8 (even though all the signs on the store said that), so some people were pretty bummed about that. When we finally got in at 8, they had a sign saying 2 variants (had to be different ones) and 4 regular. I was very happy with this to get a Coffee and a Prop - not sure how/why they did it differently than other stores, but I was happy.

I was 3rd in line, so you were just a bit back from me. I don't think I had a chance to talk to you, though - I had my headphones on watching shows up until about 7:30. I'd be shocked if there was Prop left at this point. There were well over 40 people in that line total, and they only had 2 cases of each variant, so I assume the Prop and Coffee were both gone within the first 25-28 people.

Yeah, I'm sitting on my bottle for a while I think; I'm waiting to grab a pour of Prop somewhere to make sure that I need to give the bottle some time (I'd have gone to Fulton yesterday but I had to dog sit. Fucking dog).

Yep, I saw that and the guy doing the calling out had already been through the line once. That guy is definitely a little too obnoxious IMHO, based on seeing him at a couple of recent events. However, you shed some light on this if that's the other guy's M.O.. If that's the case, he should have been kicked out and sent home empty handed. If it was an honest mistake, then who gives a crap!

I'm confused. The WF I frequent in Gold Coast initially said you could buy 2 regular and 1 variant, not one of each variant. Because the thought of waking up early to stand in cold for 1 variant didn't sound appealing, I skipped it. Now I'm hearing you could buy 4 regular and 1 of each variant, which is very nice. Is this accurate or is my intel incorrect?

Yes the guy who grabbed 2 variants needed to be called out. And the guy calling him out was doing the right thing unlike all the sheep who just let these things happen. Everyone went thru the line at LP twice. Nothing wrong with that. The staff had no issues with it at all.

I accidentally took an extra variant 2 years ago at Binny's Black Friday. It was 1 4-pack of regular, and then...3 variants, or something? The gist of it was, I thought barleywine and regular were treated the same since they were both 4-packs, so I grabbed a 4-pack of barleywine in place of a 4-pack of reg (my gf grabbed a 4-pack of reg), not realizing I basically took an extra variant instead of reg. It wasn't intentional, and at least it wasn't a bottle of Prop or VR.

Did someone specifically tell you Gold Coast WF let you get one of each variant? I didn't see anyone mention that as I scanned this thread, although I could've missed it. As far as I know, they were all supposed to do just one variant.

My friend who went said everyone could get one of each variant and 4 regular. He was around 10th in line and said everyone in front of him was mainly getting prop + coffee with some getting bw and 4 regs. Don't the Whole Foods employees usually ask what you want and hand it to you? It's not like you can grab a bunch off the shelf and see if they call you out for it

Ha ha yeah! I think i saw you with a cover over your head. If I had known I certainly would have said hi! Similar story, I called on Thursday and they guy (with an attitude mind you) said I could get the whole vertical + 4 regular totaling in 7 bottles. Not true. The sign was pretty confusing because it read '2 variants + regular'. Most people wanted 2 coffee but seemed like the cashier's were like didn't you read the sign?

Whatever, got my coffee, just figured the FB post was pretty clear. Guess that's not how it works with most BCS events.

You're right but don't know, always surprised when I ask, so idk.

Definitely keeping that spot in mind next year.

If you trust your friend, then it must be true. These beer releases frequently have quirks, especially at the WF locations. They seemed to have a concerted effort to have all the stores do the same thing (1 variant/2 regular) - as evidenced by the WF associate that posted in this thread earlier, and an employee at the Northalsted location showed me the e-mail that was sent out showing that 1 variant/2 regular per person allotment. Clearly DePaul (and it sounds like Gold Coast) had a different interpretation of that e-mail or just didn't care. The employees do ask you what you want and hand it to you, so they must've decided their own allocation there.

They specifically said right at the beginning that the variants couldn't be two of the same - but that was right at the front and they probably didn't repeat it.

I wouldn't be too dedicated to that spot thinking it'll always be a gem...last year they actually let me down based on what they had told me vs what actually transpired at the release, so you never know.

True that. I'm not mad or anything just being in customer service I kinda pick up on those sort of things. I also was chatting it up so if they said it and didn't hear it whatever. No biggie.

This is very true. Either way been having a great time with these releases and happy to meet all you nice folks! Hope to see you at the next event. If you run into a twenty something year-old guy with long hair that's probably me! Say hi! Names Alex.

Anyone looking for regular, Edgewater whole foods has 10 cases on the floor, $9.99 / bottle and limit five if you're looking to load up. I picked up three ten minutes ago and was happy to do so since I couldn't make it out for any variants this morning
