As we approach the end of 2016, thought we could get a thread going (inspired by @schopenhauerale thread last year) on people's favourite breweries, beers, up and comers etc. Here are the categories, copy/paste and fill in the blanks

I was very disappointed with every new DDC offering this year except
for P'tit Blanc. The biggest disappointment of them all was Immoralité.

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - CANADA
Still in my province, and while I'm looking forward to trying a bunch
of their beers that I haven't had yet, I find Auval to be ridiculously
overhyped. They make nice beers for sure, but they don't come
close to the hype that surrounds them.

Another big disappointment for me is the jacked up prices on some
of these beers. Ottawa got a small shipment of Collective Arts double
IPA yesterday and I didn't bother. $6 for a 473ml can? Not gonna
    get it from me.

MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING (OR HOPE TO TRY!)
    - Something other than Fat Tug from Driftwoods
    - Juxtapose - Four Winds
    - Nordet IPA - Brasserie Auval

I think maybe people here have such a romanticized view of good IPAs cause all the IPAs here were bad for so long that they latch onto whatever they can. That and social media. Just during the course of the last year the Auval hype has gotten worse to the point that after the last time I went for bottles I swore I wouldn't ever do it again. We'll see if that lasts.:flushed: Another one I see trying to horn in on that hype is Vox Populi (mainly the IPA), though they don't have near the hype of Auval yet.

BREWERY TO WATCH - YOUR PROVINCE Godspeed. Only a matter of time....

BREWERY TO WATCH - CANADA All or Nothing - curious to see how taking one of the biggest gambles in Ontario (or Canadian) brewing pays off. Freres Houblon - how much longer can these guys stay in business?

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - YOUR PROVINCE
Duggans #9 (shit does this SUCK nowadays, lowered my initial rating by almost 1 full points (or 10 basis points)... Shillow Bitter Waitress (Overhyped)... Innocente Charcoal Porter (is this even hyped??)... Indie (Overhyped) ...Bandit (Disappointment)... I'm probably giving about 20 other Toronto beers a free pass here.

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - CANADA
Four Winds putting out a bland industrial lager. I'll agree with the Auval overhype listed above

MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING (OR HOPE TO TRY!) - Probably a one-off barrel aged LTM offering.

FAVORITE BREWERY - YOUR PROVINCE: It should be Auval, but their lack of distribution makes getting their beer impossible to find and people asking for your first born in trades...pass

Le Castor: their wild ale program is really good, they have a great IPA and they are 2 min away from my house!

FAVORITE BREWERY - CANADA: Hands down, Bellwoods

TOP 3 FAVORITE BEERS - YOUR PROVINCE:
    1. Auval Super A: wish this was year round
    2. DDC Solstice D'ete framboise: I wasn't complaining when they scaled up production this year
    3. Le Castor Chardonnay: if this a sign of their upcoming wild beers, sign me up!

TOP 3 FAVORITE BEERS - CANADA
    1. Bellwoods Jelly King: Probably my favorite beer this year.
    2. Bellwoods 3 minutes to midnight: BA stout with Cherries? I'm in!
    3. Bellwoods Farmageddon: I sense a trend here...

BREWERY TO WATCH - YOUR PROVINCE

Le Castor: excellent wild ales, plus expansion (they now have a coolship) means we could be seeing some really interesting things in 2017.

    BREWERY TO WATCH - CANADA

Tooth and Nail: already some interesting things coming out from them

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - YOUR PROVINCE

Quebec as a province borders Vermont, where it seems that everyone and the neighbors dog is able to make a top notch IPA/DIPA, and it's readily available. Here, it would seem you have to murder someone to get it (Auval) or stand in line at 5:30am to get some (LTM's DIPA release). Which leads me to...

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - CANADA
Beer Jerks/Trading: My blood boils when I see someone dickswing that they got 4x alloment because "Yo! Beer is serious yo!" and proceed to post all of FT, with and ISO that is completely stoopid (LTM DIPA for King Julius...really?). Does anyone even drink beer anymore??

MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING (OR HOPE TO TRY!)
Monkish...everytime I see a picture of one of the IPAs, I start to salivate!!
    Four Winds: ISO Nectarous!

Agreed! And agreed on some ridiculous traders. I feel like I've got a good thing going with some great members on here along with a few others back in Ottawa. I try my luck sometimes if it's something really interesting and convenient, but otherwise, I'm fine with not being able to try every beer under the sun.

Made my first trip to the Alchemist's brewery in Stowe and brought back 36L of beer. This lead to me discovering The Crusher, which I really liked. I also made a few good batches of homebrew, although there were some screwups, too...

BREWERY TO WATCH - YOUR PROVINCE
Gainsbourg - their Orange Tie Wrap is great and they make a pretty solid IPA, too. They need to come out with something that's a little less expensive so I can drink it more frequently, though.

While I loved the older versions of IIPA de la sorcière, neither of the last two batches really did it for me. I think I'm basically done with Pit Caribou, sad as I am to say that. I wasn't super impressed by a lot of the Momentum releases from DDC, although Petit Detour was solid.

Barn Hammer Brewing was hyped to the moon locally and I can't say I've enjoyed a single one of their beers to date. Boring would be the word for them, sadly.

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - CANADA
I can't say that anything I was really looking forward to ended up being a major disappointment. I'm thankful to have tried a lot of great beers this year.

MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING (OR HOPE TO TRY!)
Not Canadian related, but I've got six crowlers on their way back from Weldwerks Brewing in Greeley, CO that are going to be my first foray into the NE IPA style that has become so popular. REALLY looking forward to those.

Canadian wise, I'm really hoping to get my hands on some more Bellwoods in the new year. Also still ISO Nectarous, as that's one beer I've wanted to try forever and have still never managed to get my hands on.

Disapointed about overpriced beers, regardless of where they're from, still not at the point of paying $20 for a limited release bomber. Overhype doesn't apply to Canada as much but all the endless stories of on this site of people waiting in release lines, camping chairs, mules etc. again it's just a source of entertainment, although I still wonder what the beers are like.

Perhaps you have. Not sure what beers from them you've had lately, but in 2016, they're IPA has become one of tge best I've had in the country, their 2016 Ceci n'est pas une Gueuze was vetter than last year's, they released a number of barils d'exception variants of their Porter Baltique (the brettanomyces I didn't really care for but seemed to be a big hit otherwise), their breakfast imperial stout... Although I much prefer Bellwoods in terms of Canadian breweries, I think LTM takes in Quebec due to some strong releases, a step back by DDC with sub par new offerings and a lack overall quality from other brewers in the province.

REALLY tough to call this one. A few months ago I'd have said Four Winds for sure with their cork and cage series being far and above any other program, plus some awesome hoppy releases this year. But then WHOA Twins Sails just lit it up recently! All their canned offerings have been some of the best in the country imo. I love the Callister co-op model.

    FAVORITE BREWERY - CANADA
If Bellwoods did hoppy beers as well as BC Breweries, I'd give them the trophy. But they don't. I do feel they have the best overall variety. That said the best isn't always the favorite. I'd still probably go with Four Winds on this one because they are also fairly local for me, just wish they did stouts.

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - YOUR PROVINCE
Loyalty programs. They....didn't quite hit the mark this year. Solid offerings, but a brewery should hopefully release at least one of it's best beers of the year to it's membership.

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - CANADA
Winnipeg breweries. I get it, there used to be nothing so now that there is something it feels good! But uh aside from PEG (which was great) all the new breweries I had in Winnipeg my last trip were pretty mediocre if not downright bad.

MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING (OR HOPE TO TRY!)
I'm hoping the Ontario/BC scenes get to know each other a little better. BC sees tonnes of stuff from Quebec now. Ontario should be next. Pretty much anything from Twin Sails in a can, and all those Foudres from Four Winds are on my radar.

i'm also an ex-winnipegger. i remember the days of Two Rivers and Aggasis. those were pretty awful.
Half Pints is ok or good enough.
PEG was pretty bad when i went, but hey, 1 month in, so what to expect? (the answer? more)
Torque and the other one were disgusting.

give winnipeg 2 years and i think things will be better. more competition.

Auval. I had the chance to have Arcane17 which was quite nice and have their Guerilla stout aging in the cellar. The hype and some of what I've read concerns me but a new discovery all the same.

    NOTABLE BEER-CHIEVEMENT
While not Canadian, returning to Het Anker to have lunch with my 97 year old grandfather. Enjoyed Flemish stew and Gouden Carolus classic. It was a perfect afternoon.

    BREWERY TO WATCH - CANADA
For whatever random reason I'm curious on what Le castor and Trou du diable will do next year.

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - YOUR PROVINCE
The local brewing was a disappointment this year, really hoping it picks up next year. Lots of brewers but very little quality. The LCBO quality and availability took a nose dive in my opinion. I'm thankful for the good friends that lend a hand here and there with brews.

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - CANADA
The quality of Quebec brews has disappointed me, especially when it comes to their shelf life. There are a few exceptions of course however in general I was very let down by what I had. If anyone from Montreal or Quebec wants to change my opinion in 2017 let me know!

MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING (OR HOPE TO TRY!)
    Anything from the west coast

    FAVORITE BREWERY - YOUR PROVINCE
DDC mainly based on how consistently decent, affordable and easily available they all are.

    FAVORITE BREWERY - CANADA
Bellwoods and Dunham (just to mix it up since I assume DDC would qualify here as well). I was really lucky to finally try Bellwoods and the ones I tried were very good, like Dunham's. Also, like Dunham, they could all perhaps be better in certain ways but they are all on another level regardless. I'm pretty sure Dunham is easier to get, though.

TOP 3 FAVORITE BEERS - YOUR PROVINCE
Based on my ratings and how frequently I re-bought stuff:
    • Vox Populi Citra IPA (all the way at the tail end of the year)
    • LTM IPA
    • Pit Caribou American Brown Ale
Honorable mentions to Auval Super A, Dunham No Tahoma and Le Castor Éclipse.

TOP 3 FAVORITE BEERS - CANADA
    • Juxtapose (holy fucking shit!)
    • Aromatherapy
    • Éclipse

    NEW DISCOVERY - YOUR PROVINCE
Brouerie Sutton is awesome from what I've tried and I look forward to trying more from them.

    NEW DISCOVERY - CANADA
The strange and exotic world of beers from other provinces (finally!) Thanks to awesome people from other provinces--or one's that just live near them.

    NOTABLE BEER-CHIEVEMENT
I went on a beer-cation of epic proportions (for me) that managed to include family and friends and was kick-ass in every way despite it raining most of the time.

BREWERY TO WATCH - YOUR PROVINCE
Sutton (with anticipation), Vox Populi (with measured optimism), Auval (just watch the hype like a car crash and enjoy a tasty beer--likely from someone else since it's easier to get lately).

    BREWERY TO WATCH - CANADA
I don't really know, but I'm hoping to get to try any that are worthy of being watched. I'm also willing to conduct extensive research on the subject.

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - YOUR PROVINCE
Farnham. They suck and their beer is bad. I'm through trying to be polite. I have given them more chances than someone in an abusive relationship and have gotten similar results.

Auval for the sheer clusterfuck of it all. I have had great luck getting their beers without trying too awful hard, but it nuts how much it has amped up in the last couple months. Don't think I'll be putting myself out for it in the future. Its good, but come on...

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - CANADA
I guess this is one that I am happy to not know an answer to.

MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING (OR HOPE TO TRY!)
    Anything and everything!
I feel like I can see the market in Quebec blowing up daily. It's nuts and the quality and culture around storage, presentation, access and more is really getting better. It was already great so I'm really excited to see what 2017 has to bring.

Amsterdam is a pretty good choice for biggest disappointment. At one point they were in the top 3 (or at worst a solid number 4) for the province. They seem to be stuck in reverse the last couple years.

Have you been able to try their hoppy stuff in the last 6 months or so? They've really up their game. At this time last year, I thought Bellwoods hoppy beers were some of the most over hyped beers in Canada. Some even had mild diacetyl problems. Now though, they are super dialed in......Jutsu, Roman Candle, Witchshark. Previously, I've never really liked Boogie Monster, but I had a new bottle just a couple of days ago that knocked my socks off. Whatever tweaks they've made, they've been awesome.

    1. all the years roll into one another. there have been 2, if not 3 BOYD releases. i think it was released this year. would have to check.
2, Outliers #2 was a one-off stout they release on tap only. it was incredible. very under the radar. was a stout in fresh oak barrels and the oak was magnificent. i literally had the last pour of it.
    3. all barncat IPAs are hazy? that's perfect.

On tap at the pub. Had 6 tasters and all were average to below average IMO except for the Saison Seigle Rose et Brett which was not nice at all.

    1. There have been quite a few BOYD releases for sure. I still have the last one which is dated 2015 but was released in December so the delineation is a bit foggy...especially after drinking one.
    2. I did have the Outliers #1 which was pretty exceptional. So good!
    3. I've had the Green Out, The Juice and Eminence and all have been mega hazy. Really enjoyed them all too!
    Cheers!

I believe this has a lot to do with some dialing in of recipes but also in big part to a load of new steel and a state of the art system.

    FAVOURITE BREWERY - YOUR PROVINCE
This was a tough one; I had to think long and hard. I think I'll have to go with Sawdust City. Everything they've released to the LCBO in 2016 has been pretty solid. I just wish Long Dark Voyage was available more often. Honourable mentions to GLB and Collective Arts.

BREWERY TO WATCH - YOUR PROVINCE

Half Hours on Earth. The only thing holding them back at the moment is distribution. If they can get shelf access and/or ramp up production, look out for these guys in 2017.

BEER DISAPPOINTMENTS / OVERHYPED - YOUR PROVINCE

Mill Street. Overhyped definitely isn't the term to use here, but most of their new releases in 2016 were overpriced and mediocre.

MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING (OR HOPE TO TRY!)

    - New stuff from American brewers like Stone, Boulevard, Lagunitas and Smuttynose. The LCBO has been doing a better job of bringing these sorts of products in and I hope to see the trend continue.
    - Still want to try that McAuslan Scotch Ale Barrique. Speaking of McAuslan, why does their RIS never show up around here anymore? :slight_frown:

Half Hours is worth the hype. Bellwoods have picked it up a notch. Quebec is more or less only the same, with the addition of Auval. BC lots of ups and downs so forget them for a while.

Top beers had in 2016, Crooked Stave, J Wakefield
