That's great that they classify modern vs traditional.

I think they were one of the first places to do this. I think they classify it differently now, maybe something along the lines of "pale" and "amber". I don't remember.

Bear in mind that list is from 2015. @SunDevilBeer look at the prices.

Interesting, because in the Oktoberfest Blind Tasting thread (I think) we are discussing Austrian Marzens.

They appear to be almost like Vienna lagers rather than amber Oktoberfests. Looks like this beer is 5.1% ABV.

I’d be curious what this one tastes like. If it sees distribution here in MA, I’ll be sure to grab some.

Has anyone tried Warstiner yet? I saw it for the first time today but whimped out and just bought more Weihenstephaner.

Looks like Magouns has the full menu right away. Interesting that prices haven’t gone up in 4 years!

I noted on their website that when they announced their Oktoberfest this year there was no Spaten and Paulaner Marzen. And the menu still doesn’t have it.

Had the Andechs which is solid as usual. And the Rathaus Marzen. The Rothaus was interesting. It was the same color as the Pils only a shade darker perhaps. Taste was maltier than the Pils, almost like a light Helles Bock. Toed the line between Helles Bock and pale Oktoberfest. Not bad, but not as good as the Pils.

Just stopped by Magouns and had the Hacker Pschorr and the Traunstein. Loved both but the Hacker Pschorr was my favorite.

Magouns is just such a great place. Love their beer selection and their food.

Last year The Dive Bar had a really cool Ofest celebration. 9 Gravity kegs on their patio in Liters, Mama Roux was open, and it was one of those nice fall days that turned really crisp. Kept my beer cold. I hope they are doing it again

I was drinking it at a party so I can't talk specifics but it was on the Marzen end of the spectrum and it was very tasty. I was up in VT when I bought it though and haven't seen it down here in the Boston area yet.

I bought a 4 pack in Somerville, and I’ve only had one can, and it was after a couple Oktoberfests at Magouns that evening, but I might like it better than even the imported amber Oktoberfests I’ve had this year. The imported amber Oktoberfests are not quite clicking for me as they have in year’s past, but they’re still very good (The pale ones have been better, especially Weihenstephan, my favorite so far from either style).

But I’ve also had multiples of each of the imports, so we’ll see how my second can of Zero Gravity is. The bonus is is that it’s a lower ABV than most Oktoberfests being only 5.4% ABV.

And the award for best value in Oktoberfests goes to......... Benediktiner @ $6.99 for a 4 pack of pounders!

It's labeled as a Festbier but I'd describe it as almost the exact middle ground between a pale and an amber Oktoberfest. Canned all the way back in May so it may not have the hops it once did, but it's got a great, light, clean, breadiness that's more than satisfying enough on its own.

I also saw they have a Helles (for the same price) so I'm going to be sure to grab that next time too. Is this brewery new to the import scene or have I just never noticed it before?

You’ve just never noticed. Their Helles has been around for over a year (or longer) I believe.

And their Oktoberfest has been on Magoun’s menu for a couple years if I recall correctly.

Man, 9/21 is going to be tough to navigate. Dorchester Brewing Oktoberfest, Trillium Oktoberfest (at all FOUR locations), Nightshift’s Oktoberfest, and Aeronaut’s Oktoberfest in Allston.

I’m thinking of hitting up Trillium first (not sure which location in Boston), then going to Nightshift. With maybe Magoun’s in the middle or at the end for dinner. Dorchester is out of the way, and Allston’s seems kind of meh.

9/28 is just as ridiculous with Bow Market’s Oktoberfest, Lamplighter’s, and Zwanze Day. But I’ll be in Portland, so no worries there.

I’m also eyeing Brewer’s Alley at some point in October because they mention Notch as being one of the breweries there, so I imagine their Oktoberfest will be on tap.

    Prost!

P.S. - Anyone else trying to map out plans on the 21st? I always like to try to get different perspectives.

Thoughts on Night Shift's? Saw it tonight but decided to pass.

    I wasn't a huge fan of Sierra Nevada's.

The prevailing thought, it seems, is that the Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest wasn't great, but I really liked it. I had a few during the Patriots game Sunday night and have three left. It's a lot thinner than other Festbiers, but I don't hold that against them. Maybe not "to style," but I thought it was an easy drinking, tasty beer.
