While I've been into craft beer since 2005 or so, last Sep I decided to try as many different beers as possible and keep a log with ratings for each. I also post reviews here on Beer Advocate when I have the time.

I recommend all craft beer newbies to this. I've learned a ton - such I don't like brown ales no matter how many I try and the fact that IPAs taste better when warmed a bit.

For the record, my top beer out of the 205 is Heavy Sea Loose Cannon and Stone and Founders are my top rated breweries with Victory close behind.

Thanks to all for helping me along here. I'm on here a lot reading reviews and getting advice. I plan on scaling back with cheaper beers for a while - I live in New England so it will be a Summer of Harpoon and Sam Adams with the occasional pricey bomber.

You should have waited til you hit 300—would've had more "oomph."
BTW I'm @ 378 different beers since June. It's a fun ride to be on!
    Cheers!

Wow..I'm hoping to hit 300 late fall. What's your top rated beer/brewery?

Since we're measuring our e-peens here, I'm at 311 unique brews (that I remembered enough to notate).

I don't know that I have a top rated brewery, but I have my clear favorites: Russian River, Sierra Nevada, Deschutes, Firestone Walker, Stone, Boulevard, Ommegang, Unibroue, Founders, Alpine, Lagunitas, The Bruery, Fremont (local), Brasserie Dupont, Brouwerij Het Anker. I'll basically try anything from any of these breweries without hesitation.

My top rated beers right now are Pliny the Elder, KBS, and Parabola. I haven't had a Pliny in a while, but a fresh batch just blew into town, might grab a couple to revisit it. Last night I had another all-time favorite, Saison-Brett, and it wasn't quite as good as I'd remembered. Still a great beer, but it didn't blow me away like last time.

Congrats on the new hobby. You will find a lot of different answers. For a while me and UCLABrewN84 had a good battle going but right now he is kicking my ass this year. Its fun to see how you compare to buddies or make it a game as well.

I did 776 new beers last year, for 2012 up to 200 I think.

    Cheers!

I encourage any craft beer drinker to look into the app, "Untappd", if they haven't already. It is essentially a social network for serious beer drinkers. If you are like me, you will love being able to log and record information on all the brews you drink. You can upload a picture, rate & review, and also add friends and see what they are drinking. It is amazing and convenient. It has become my own personal beer journal, and a tool I use almost everyday. You can log on from your phone or home computer and quickly see what you've tasted or what you want to taste. I can't say enough good things about it!

According to Untappd, I've had 411 unique since Nov 5th. Yikes! Some are full beers, some are samples at a fest or tasting.

Here's the link for my Untappd if anyone wants to add me: http://untappd.com/user/DSlim71

Another newer source for BA's is Instagram. Lots of people posting under #craftbeer, #beer, #BA etc...another good way (using photos) to keep track of your ticking.

    p.s. follow me!

Some buddies and I created a google doc to keep track of how many beers we've tried and we're pretty competitive about it. I've had ~500 since october. OP is absolutely right you learn tons doing this.

    Reds are bad IMO :slight_frown:

Summer 2010-summer2011 was probably my busiest stretch and at one point I had over 365 full reviews in a year span. I never actually tried to race/tick, I just reviewed 1-2 beers on a nightly basis because I was still living at home, employed (right after college), with nothing much else to do at night. No reviewing at festivals, most tastings or small sample sizes. I am up to about 900 reviews since July 2009 and well over 1000 beers tried since I turned 21. I slowed down a lot because I mixed-a-six my way out of affordable 12oz beers to try at most local bottle shops. I don't have the $ to begin consuming most of the imports, bombers or 750mls and reviews have slowed down drastically in the last 3-4 months. Now I am enjoying more six/twelve packs again and it really is a nice feeling. Saving a ton of money also feels nice.

I only note a beer if it's a proper pour, sips and tastes don't count for me.

I'm at about 950 over the last 3 years, I didn't keep track during the first year as a BA, kind of pointless IMO when you're just trying to establish a baseline for everything.
