Are these single bottles a guide to price gouging? I was recently in Chicago where one of my favorite Dipas is readily available and just couldn't bring myself to spend the 10 dollar price tag. I morally realized this beer is equivalent to $30 a six pack. I squawked at Hopslam being $18. No best by date and I had to pass. Thoughts?
It's not gouging because it's not a life-and-death necessity. It's an excessive markup that many of us find unjustifiable, that's all. But if that's the only format the beer's available in, you don't have much choice in the matter. Buy it or don't.
Most bombers are severely overpriced. But like was said earlier, if it isn't available in a 6-pack then you have no choice. I'd be curious to know what the average markup is when buying a bomber. Here I can find Palate Wrecker in 4-packs for $11.49 or I can buy a bomber for $7.99. That's over a 40% markup.
It stinks but as others said you make the decision to buy it or not. It gets even worse when you are dealing with 750s. Most are not available in other size options or, in my case, the store chooses not to carry both size options. I was routinely dropping $20-$25 on two 750's which basically amounts to a little more than a 4pk.
I meant I bought Hopslam at $18 and thought that was pricy...this beer I am not going to name, made Hopslam seem reasonable
There has been a billion threads about bombers being overpriced. The short version is - they are. But people keep paying it, so breweries keep making it.
Why was Hoptimum in a 750ml bottle ~$9, yet a 4 pack of 12oz bottles is ~$10? Assuming margin for profit is fairly uniform, what's the point of large bottles? Or are big bottles only slightly more pricey to use, but they mark it up profusely? Eh, a worthy query.
Ok clearly he is talking about Dreadnaught. So he made the right choice. I am sick of breweries like Three Floyds who have so many hoppy beers not doing any kind of dating and then charging those kinds of prices.
Dreadnaught is amazing, but yeah. $10 is an awful lot for a bomber with no date. At least Zombie Dust is a great deal considering the amount of flavor packed into each bottle for less than $2.
If we're talking about Dreadnaught, yeah it's overpriced. It's the only beer I've given a perfect score, but even with that it's hard for me to pull the trigger. The stuff disappears so quickly around here that if I see it on the shelf, I know it's gotta be relatively fresh, which is a plus. Bombers suck 95% of the time..
