I thought this was an interesting and a new concept. Opening this weekend in Chicago: 3 breweries (Burnt City, Around the Bend, and Bold Dog) will share one collective brewing space and 1 taproom. Each brewery will have 10 taps each with other 10 taps dedicated to guests or a potential fourth resident. The venture is called District Brew Yards Collective.

Other features include: all taps will be pour-your-own, no tipping, single 16oz cans will be available for purchase, and BBQ

Personally, I think it's a great idea that makes financial and business sense. I am looking forward to checking this place out, sampling, and getting single cans to go. These breweries have been around for a while and so far have been rather average. It will be interesting to see if this collaborative atmosphere and an actual taproom (2 out of 3 have not had a taproom before) will improve quality and sales.

What do you think? Have places like these been popping up in your area?

Not really the same thing, but they just announced a rotating brewery beer garden in Boston this summer.

In Denver we had one of our more successful nano breweries (Wit's End) move into the existing tasting room for Strange Brewing. Now they have 2 distinct sections. Bierstadt Lagerhaus shares its space with C-Squared Ciders. I believe it has worked out pretty well in both instances thus far. Not quite the same situation, but at least in the ballpark.

As space gets tougher to come by out here I can see more of that happening. Some of these larger food court and shopping spaces could likely sustain multiple breweries (or cideries) under the same roof.

F*CK that! So, I have to pour my own beer AND I can't tip myself?

I'm a big fan of the no tipping places that have been popping up here and there. I also like the pour-your-own concept if the setting is right. This is the first time I've heard of it being used in a brewery taproom setting. It will be fun to make and pour your own flights, especially with 40 taps.

Really looking forward to be able to grab a bunch of single cans and mix and match instead of committing to a 4/6 pack of one beer.

Saw this model in FT Wayne Indiana, they included an option for amateurs to rent the space to brew bigger batches (I think they were a 1 barrel system) and hosted some sort of home brew club. Seemed like a cool space
