This arose (again) in another thread, so I thought I'd throw out the question...especially since I proffer the advice so frequently: who out there has had the great good fortune to have 3+ Schlenkerla Rauchbiers in one sitting? If you have, what were/are your thoughts? Do you agree with the local Bamberg wisdom that #3 tastes better than #2...#4 better than #3...etc., etc., etc.?

Definitely, and it really shows just how incredible the base beers truly are. I also think the same wisdom holds for great German lagers regardless of whether they are smoked or not- they just get better the more you have them.

I've even asked my local beer guy if I can order up one of those 5l minikegs of Urbock. Definitely having at least three if I can snag one of those puppies:sunglasses:.

Yes, in Bamberg about 4 times. It is true.

The same holds for Zum Uerige, the locals say you don't notice the intense bitterness after about 6, but those are 0.25 liter glasses.

Thanks for posting I really enjoyed it. The beers they picked were all pretty awesome and well rounded. Most are favorites of mine.

Brought one of those home for Christmas eve dinner a few years ago. Three probably did taste better than the first, but they were all delicious. What a treat!

For me the 1st beer in a series is always the best.

So, if you drink at multiple times throughout the day, you get more firsts and better tasting experiences!

i could make it through 1 if i wanted, one time in bamberg i had 2 and a half, the half was at the brewpub right next to it where i had the sampler as well. I also had various other good beers around town that day so i wont complain. And personally, the first one tastes fucking awesome.

yes, multiple times, in Bamberg, but then again, I was born in Bamberg. Last time with my dad in june when the wife and kids went shopping. also had the bamberger zweibel which was just as awesome.

Not sure if this counts but I recently poured my last two bottles of the Eiche Doppelbok into a 1 litre stein and had my own little personal Augustfest. If I had any left I could have easily have filled the glass a second or a third time.

Unfortunately I haven't. But if everything goes to plan I'll be in Bamberg region for a few months next year. I'll post my findings then.

Spent time wandering through Bamberg some years ago, lunched at Schlenkerla and had a wonderful time. I can't recall how many beers we had there during the course of the meal, but the memory is always good and leaves me longing to return, so I have the feeling the beer was tasting pretty good!

I have recently (bottles...but fresh ones) and I'm not sure it'll change anyone's opinion...but by then the smoke has lightened up a bit via palate fatigue. Someone who isn't as big of a fan will probably by able to get some more of the nuances.
Sometimes I think that first wave of smoke can be overwhelming a little bit and other flavors get lost if you aren't used to it.
I think they best way to get into smoked beers is probably to start milder or even maybe with some smoked porters over the course of a few days. Start with the Shiner Smokehaus or Shlenkerla Helles, then maybe move on to Stone smoked porter, then Spezial rauchbier, then the bolder Shlenkerlas aren't so in-your-face. All that said, I still like the Spezial Rauchbier more

As much as a fan as I am, that first one can still be a pretty firm punch in the nose with the smokiness. When I was drinking them at the tavern 3-4 days a week, even the first one seemed mellower. But on my recent trip back the first couple sure packed that old familiar punch. Quickly got over it, though, as we were there literally every night of our stay!

I had reservations about visiting Bamberg for the Rauchbier back when I did (mid '90s) because the only exposure I'd had was imported Kaiserdom Rauchbier -- and that stuff was heavy at the time (whether to my untrained palate or other wise). I was pleasantly surprised at how much more mellow the Rauchbier is at the source. I never grew tired or fatigued of the flavor.

Yeah, I actually think that on tap it's much more mellow and drinkable. Shlenkerla was my first stop on Bamberg and I remember a tour group of Australians telling to me to avoid their beers when I walked in  While still smoky, it's not nearly as potent as from the bottle.
I do think that after a couple...pretty much any anything as long as you're drinking the same thing, you tend to get a little numbed to nuance. In the case of the smoked beers, it's kind of backwards, though. I think the smoke almost clears up a little and some of the other flavors come out since you kind of get numbed to elephant in the glass.
