I'm glad to see Schlenkerla getting some love, one of best cheese beers ever!

My thoughts exactly. You don't necessarily need three in one sitting either, in my experience. If you buy a case and have one or two per night I think you'll find that the same thing happens, i.e., you start noticing the other flavors more.

I've sessioned the Märzen a few times now. I don't see why anyone would consider it a problem.

Never had 3 at once, but I've tried at least 4 of their beers and all were awesome. The best was the Krausen, since it was keg-conditioned and fresher than any bottle I've had. It's a great savory experience, truly one of the beers that's artfully crafted and unique.

Maybe not, but Schlenkerla has never hit me the way Kaiserdom did. Without visiting Bamberg and enjoying all of the Rauchbier there, I may have never tried another from my Kaiserdom experience!

I can drink it on tap locally np, 3 bottles I doubt I could do it. It goes better with food, but 3 straight all by itself from a bottle count me out. Something about that charcoal briquette taste in my mouth turns me off after awhile.:grimacing:

That bottled Kaiserdom, in the 1980s, didn't do me any favors either. I recall it being very harsh, as well as smoky- pretty unpleasant overall. I'd venture that back then you'd probably be getting an old, mishandled bottle if you got one at all. That one left a mark for a few years. I didn't really take to smoked beers until like 1993 or so, when I came across Rauchenfels Steinbier and Alaskan Smoked Porter. I think Samuel Adams came out with their first version of their Scotch Ale back then too, which had a noticible amount of peat malt in it (affordable, too- a case for a bit more than $20). At that point I felt safe enough to give Schlenkerla a shot, and kind of felt silly for taking so long after I tried it.

I sed to do this a bit and enjoyed it a lot. Now I consider them a special treat and pop them on occassion.

I'll be honest, it's hard to get one of those beers down, they taste like I'm licking a campfire log. I could do it, but i can't say I'd particularly enjoy the process.

I'll take your advice, revisit them, and session 3 in a row by years end.

I am sure they would love for me to drink three at a time. At almost $5 a pop.

Having said that, I like them just fine from the first sip. No need to keep chugging for me.

For the most part I'd agree with you, but my introduction to it was at a beer tasting (a new happening at the time -- 1986 or 87?) run by the distributor's (Merchant du Vin) area rep. Stuff was about as fresh as anyone could get it.

If we could only go back in time to see how that same beer tastes with a palate that's more acclimated to the style...

I definitely recall the bottle I had, and it was at a bar in Greenwich Village with all of the 'Beers of the World' on a large menu. A lot of the stuff at that place didn't move too well. The Kaiserdom was supposed to be my last beer of the night, too, but after that I had to order another beer just to refresh the old taste buds

Fo' shore. All I can remember of the tasting was everyone at the table using the "liquid bacon" comparison. While I didn't necessarily say that, I do recall it being pretty strong on smoke -- stronger than anything I've ever had since. But yeah, 26 - 27 years ago? Who knows?

I find the really old Rauchbiers to taste like liquid smoke (vile), if it is just old it has that liquid bacon thing, fresh it is just smoke to me. Nothing like drinking one at the source - or making your own so it is fresh.
