3L bottle format

I believe they can only refill it with the beer that is on the label. So, the anniversary ones can't be refilled, but the Bastard ones can be.

p.s. Sorry for the necro. But I added a bunch of new ones to the list.

 

They don't do it for the recent vintages.

 

Can anyone explain the appeal of buying the 3L bottles? The Stone bottle sells for $84, if I remember correctly. More or less 100 ounces of beer. That's less than 5 bombers of beer when Double Bastard, for example, sells for $8 a pop. So you're paying an extra $44 to have a big bottle in your house with no good use. Is that it?

 

They're fun at parties.

 

I have had my big Double Bastard refilled at growler stations a couple times. They're a blast at parties, like @cookiequiz said. Plus, I bought the bottle with 2 other friends, so it was only 26 dollars each.

 

I recall hearing that 750mL bottles age better than 375mL or 12 oz do, I think due to a smaller ratio of head space to liquid resulting in less oxidation. I think that progressively larger bottles would amplify this effect. Plus, as has been stated, they just look freaking cool!

Saint Bernardus sells a 1.6 gallon bottle of ABT 12. The ones I have seen have been $250+
