In case anyone hasn't seen it yet.

Prices keep creeping up and they sure are milking it at $100 for that gift set.

I love 4 Hands, but does anyone else think aging imperial milk stouts is pretty much a waste of a barrel? They should make a variant where the barrel, aging time, and vanilla are the same, but the base beer is an RIS.

That being said, I really want to try the port version.

@dlcarst I know what you mean, but I gotta say I've had some BA milk stouts that were fantastic. Of course, its probably a good idea to drink them soon.

Due to the price gouging on that gift set, and the price creeping up as @Budah mentioned, I'm probably skipping the release. Not to mention the last batch of Madagascar was disappointing.

I think I'm going to give them one more shot. But I agree that the last batch was underwhelming.

Milk stouts just don't have the thick mouthfeel, chocolatey maltiness, and complexity of a great RIS. Anyone else try the base beer for Madagascar when they've had it on tap at the brewery? I had it about 2 years ago. It was quite good, but a milk stout. I think Madagascar has just lost some of its luster as breweries, including 4 Hands, have really stepped up their BA game in the last few years.

That being said, I really want to try the port version.

Yeah, when these were $17 and you could get them at Schnucks, they were a good pickup. Now they’re $23, $26, or basically $50 (if you figure the knob is about $50), and you’ve got to wait (probably) a couple hours in line in the cold weather for them. Just not worth the cost/effort anymore.

Also, I agree with gib above...I’ve always felt like 4 Hands stouts tasted great but their mouthfeel is subpar. If they could get with Perennial and figure that out, then they’d probably be worth the cost/hassle described above.

Debating on going out to this myself... anyone been to any of the past Madagascar releases?

I went last year, it was pretty typical but busy.

I love 4 Hands, but haven't been all that impressed with their stouts at all. I have had Absence of Light, the Chocolate Milk Stout variants, La Belleza, Zellige, and Bona Fide. They all seemed to lack something. I have heard good things about the Madagascars, but might pass at that MSRP.

I live in STL, and wouldn't stand in line for it for $17, much less $26. Sorry fellas.

Yeah, it’s finally hit a breaking point. I enjoy Madagascar but $200 for an allocation of that stuff is INSANE.

    Madagascar sucked last year. Pass.

I love Chocolate Milk Stout and the variants, because a milk stout is perfect for flavor added beers (why mess up a great RIS with that stuff?), and because they're reasonably priced.

Can't argue with that at all. Their milk stouts are reasonably priced. The blackberry one was a pleasant surprise.

How’s the line looking? Just curious if the pricing deterred anyone? Assume not?

The line is pretty long but not unbearable. The variants brought everyone out.
