Someone was kind enough to share one of these last night and I couldn't believe there was any hype behind it. I just don't get it.

I had been searching for Permanent Funeral for what seemed like forever. Although it was good, it was not the life changing experience I was lead to believe it would be.

KBS. Very good beer, but not world class and I will not be hunting it down like many people do next year. So many other great beers that are much easier to grab.

I was really disappointed by SoS. I even landed a second shipment thinking the first was off; nope. Sadly, Zombie has really fallen off lately. Maybe my tastes have changed as I've tried more beers, but it's not worth the hype anymore.

I have to disagree here, I might be a bit of a homer, but I loved everything from them(except 1492). The bombers are quite a bit better than the contract brewed 12 oz.

The term whale in it's meaning is in reference to Ahab in Moby Dick so contextually it is personal rather than what meaning you may have assigned to it so in essence it really hasn't lost any meaning besides to what you may may have assigned to it

If you call these whales, I've only had KBS and Permanent Funeral. KBS was great. Permanent funeral was a letdown for me. I even tried it again to confirm. It was okay, just not top tier status. I don't really know if these classify as whales though, maybe for the rest of the country that doesn't get the distro.

I 100% agree. Way too many Beer Advocate members over-abbreviate breweries, beers, etc. I'm guilty of doing it myself, sometimes.

On topic...I was pretty disappointed with Prairie Bomb! It may not be much of a whale, but I feel like it's a bit over-hyped.

I tracked Abraxas down for the first time this year and it is one of the best non BA stouts I've ever had! Cheers!

Not exactly sure why everyone is valuing Regal Rye so highly on their Whale list... It's a too sweet, cherry, salty mess... Least favorite BC variant this year.

Also, fresh Dark Lord (besides BVDL) is not good at all. A three or four year old bottle on the other hand is fantastic.

Saddened by all the Black Tuesday negativity, haven't had either of my 2014 bottles yet, maybe I'll just wait...

The definition of Whale must be different than what I was expecting. Some beers listed are annual release shelf beer that are quite easily obtained. I was figuring were talking DB Huna ,and BA Abraxas level of difficulty to acquire.

Are whales just hyped up beers? If so I've had Heady Topper recently and I went to the Trillium brewery in Canton, MA and got a 64 oz growler of Congress St IPA. Those were awesome!

I'm just here for the Laughs. Yet, I've had some of these "Whalez" and I've been let down by a few. Yet, some are Breath Taking works of Liquid Art. I've pissed out a lot of beer but one of the "Whalez" I've had that I just didn't see was worth it's weight was Westy 12. Is it a fine beer? Sure. Is it better than some of the mass Distributed Belgian Strong Darks? Not even close. I'd rather dome some Pannepot Grand Reserva and call it a night.
