It does, I bought a case last summer and it drops off noticeably within only a few days. I got to try it same day it was bottled and it was mindblowing within a week not so much. Still good but not what it is on tap or fresh from the kiosk.

Nah....by your definition there are very few whales in the world. I completely disagree. I guess a Westy 12 isn't a whale because it is brewed often. Many folks will look endlessly for that beer due to it being hard to aquire. You are trying force your definition of a whale on others. In my opinion everyone's whales will be different due inaccessability or in some cases limited production. The definition of a whale isn't exactly the same for everyone.

Goddamn, the number of BVDL haters is huge. I had it in 2013 (a year old at that point) and it was one of the top 5 beers that I've had to date, and this is coming from a guy who absolutely HATED regular Dark Lord.

For me, I haven't really had a lot of the "whale" beers (the first iteration of Rare, but hey...) but honestly, let downs aren't common. More common is having beers that don't live up to the hype but are still good. Black Tuesday, however, was one that was hyped that completely and utterly disappointed. Smelled fantastic, but was rocket fuel-esque burn all the way down. I felt like my breath could be set on fire.

they are my number one brewer but the batches are inconsistent. An excellent batch is worth the hype. When it tastes off, its just a really good beer. Ive had fresh batches not be their best, but when its at its finest, its really fine

But not everyone can make a great east coast IPA
If you are referring to TreeHouse Haze I am shocked. That was one of the greatest DIPAs I've ever drank

Haze might be very well the BEST 2XIPA I've ever had...right on. Oh, and for all the people saying Cherry Rye is terrible, just send them all this way.

Dark Lord and Julius. Don't get me wrong Julius was pretty good but I expected it to be great. So many better IPAs out there

It said whales, not white whales. Is there a list of whales? I know there is a list of white whales. I thought whales was more a personal thing rather than an accepted list. And I think the OP meant biggest letdowns.

However, if there is a whale list please accept my apology, and please post it for those of us who haven't read it. Thanks.

Yes it was started to avoid controversy in the White Whale BIF and has been updated a few times.

Just recently had a 2013 Olde Hickory The Event Horizon. It had definitely fallen off, probably bc the alcohol is only 8.5%. Would love to try fresh.

It was almost completely devoid of mouthfeel for me. All the Pappy magic and goodness was present, just not backed up by a solid thick creamy presence. But yes, to each his own.

I know you probably didn't have them, but their best years may be over. Still 2 of the most interesting and delicious beers in beer history :grinning:
