I had one that was about that old not long ago. Was at cellar temps vs fridge.
It was pretty good. Nothing amazing.

Hell, I hadn't noticed that. I just went and gave him his first "like" just for joining to ask the question. BTW, he hasn't cleaned his fridge in a minimum of 5 years? I mean, I've got beer I don't know I've got. But, it's in my friends (actual)cellar, and things get confused. I can't imagine having a beer in the fridge for 5 years and never noticing it.

I say this guy is a troll... with all due respect. "Oh, wow, what is that in my fridge right behind the milk and the pickles? I forgot to look at it for FIVE years" Yeah, right

Maybe, but I could see this happening...I've got probably 100 beers in my fridge right now, plus 100+ cellared away, the chance of something random (especially a can) getting lost in the shuffle certainly is a possibility.

But do you not clean and shuffle your fridge periodically? I empty my fridge completely and scrub it at least once a year... it is something that should be done, I think...

I do, most definitely! In fact I sort/organize my beer fridge a couple times a week, it's kind of become a weird habit at this point  But for someone who isn't that diligent, or perhaps a can gets placed in the veggie drawer or something and gets stuck in the back, I can see it happening. Not to mention I think there are lots of people out there who don't clear their regular fridge like you said, let alone a beer fridge in the garage or something...

So no, this would never happen to me and probably most people, but it also doesn't surprise me that it would happen.

I forgot I made this post. This was not a troll thread. The beer was left in a relative's fridge and was never thrown out (for maybe sentimental reasons?) and was awaiting my return.

I did end up cracking it open. It was good. Any bitterness had completely smoothed out, but I did notice an alcoholic bite I thought would have mellowed out with time. I would prefer it over an un-aged Ten Fidy but would not say it was better than a green version of any of the better big stouts out there.

I was hoping I had accidentally left a bottle of Kate the Great in the fridge too (or better yet in a cool corner of the basement), but this was just wishful thinking.

    Cheers,
    bmr.

I wonder why anyone would have to ask.. Generally speaking, no matter how old a beer, try it. Cant be worse than just dumping it. Its not going to kill you..

Did a 5 year vertical about a year ago and they were all great. Memory is little foggy but I think the 5yr was the weakest but not by much. 1-2 years seemed to be best.

I had this one from 2006 a few weeks back. It was still surprsingly delicious.

I agree. When in doubt I whip it out... The bottle opener that is. I recently found behind my kegerator covered in dust, two six packs. One was a blueberry wheat ale and the other a kolsch, both brewed by me in 2012. Neither was very good but I didn't hesitate to crack them open.
