Absolutely, if you can't reciprocate, that's one thing. If you can and you choose not to....that makes me not want to open up anymore rare bottles with you. And quantity isn't the same as quality in this situation either. It's fine if you don't want to open up a bottle of the nice stuff the same day that I bring one over, but sometime in the near future would be nice. But I do think it has a lot to do with what they want to do with the bottles, which usually involves self gain rather than sharing with those who share with you. Not the end of the world, but it's kind of annoying.

To me, based on how OP worded it, the difference is in trying to appreciate the beer, vs just checking a box on your checklist. No one said you have to enjoy or appreciate everything that you taste, but I think the point was to drink the beer for the right reasons; in short "don't be a dick".

Again though, I'm only interpreting OPs words, as it did not seem to me that the objection was to people spending a few minutes using Untappd, but rather objected to people that care more about how many of the Top 250 they've had than how much they enjoyed what they drank.

I think the difference, according to the OP, is that "ticking" means not even bothering to try to appreciate the beer - essentially taking a sip just so you can say, "yep, had that one". It's like the difference between going to the Grand Canyon, hiking some trails, taking in the breathtaking views, etc. versus walking to the rim, checking in on FourSquare or Facebook or whatever without even looking up at the natural wonder right in front of you, then immediately getting back in the car & driving home.

Nice analogy, I think that sums it up well.

i still don't see the difference. plenty of people go to the places like niagra falls (grand canyon is a bit different, yes because there is something to do there ie hiking), snap a picture, get a sandwhich at the subshop and then they can say they've been to the grand canyon. most tourism is about taking a picture, checking it off on a list and then moving on. some people can spend 4 hours reading every word on the wall in a museum vs others who breeze through it. doesn't mean the one who read every word enjoyed it more...i'd argue that reading every word on the wall is less of an enjoyable experience than just moseying around.

i think that this is one of those topics where i won't be swayed, mostly since i consider myself a ticker and though i enjoy beer, a ticker's gotta tick...and i get just as much joy out of the new tick as the guy who doesn't enjoy beer. granted i might revisit said beer again in the future (i actually don't think a ticker really exists who won't ever have the same beer twice)

I actually think we're on the same page on this one. Only I put a lot of stress on the savoring, both when I drink beer and when I travel, and it sounds like you derive your enjoyment from building your personal list of beers sampled, or places visited. The major thing is that, while many (including myself) just can't get behind the "ticking" mentality, you seem to have no shame in your game. And for that I salute you.

This is a great read! Thanks for the info! With that being said, is there anywhere on BA that posts info on local bottleshares?? I've been wanting to get into these for a while, but I don't really know where to get started as none of my friends are into craft beer as much as I am.
