My first time in Germany and I'm working lik a dog. I have been stuck at work or the hotel all week. I have a very minimal amount of time in Berlin this Saturday. I will be doing the walking tour bewtween Alexanderplatz and Brandenburg gate. Where are the best places to get good in that area?

    Thansk for your help

Augustiner on Gendarmenmarkt would be right there if you can't really deviate from the tour...and if, like me, you prefer a Mass (or 3) of "simply perfect" Helles to any German "craft" beer.

Thanks for your quick response. My tour is about 2 hours. That gives me several hours to roam a bit.I enjoy German beer styles but I've only americanized versions. I'd really like to taste authentic German.. I've never been a fan of WeizenBier until this week when I had a few in our hotel. Magantudes better than the american version ... so smooth and flavorful. I would love to get a real helles or miabock.

    Thanks again for your help

I personally wouldn't leave Germany without taking advantage of any and every opportunity to drink Augustiner Helles from the Holzfass (wooden keg)...even if it's in the Prussian (and not the Bavarian) capital.

And yes, there's really no substitute for the authentic German styles fresh from the source...even if the source is a hotel bar!

Prost, and report back if you have time.

I'm not a huge fan of the Gendarmenmarkt Augustiner as a restaurant, although there's no arguing the beer. Plus, I think from 6:00 pm onward on weekdays they tap Edelstoff from a wooden keg.

Regarding wheat beers, the Weihenstephaner restaurant is in the middle of the tourist district by the Hackescher Markt. It's a short walk from the Museum Island, so right in that stretch that you're talking about, between the Brandenburg Gate to the Alexanderplatz.

Weisswurst breakfast at Weihenstephan restaurant followed by walking tour (and a Currywurst for lunch) followed by a few mass from the wooden keg at Augustiner? Sounds good to me...Bavaria in Berlin

There have been many "craft-beer" places popping up in Berlin in recent time. But I guess for an American that's not too interesting if you're interested in authentic German styles.
I've been to the Georgbraeu brewpub some time ago. It's quite a big and touristy place, but the beer is alright and German dishes are relatively cheap for Berlin standards. And it's located perfectly on the banks of the Spree in the Nikolaiviertel right next to Alexanderplatz.
Authentic Berliner Weisse is more or less extinct. But Andreas Bogk from Bogk-Bier is brewing authentic Berliner Weisse with old yeast strains he revitalized. His beers are extremely hard to get.

Yea, I thought about mentioning this, but from what I understand, all the bottles were more or less accounted for before they were even finished conditioning.

Yes, probably nothing available anywhere right now. But I read somewhere that he plans to start selling some time this year. @LBerges Do you know more?

My only suggestion is don't try to do too much - hit up 2 cool places of your choice and just enjoy.

    This!

Don't get too wrapped around the axle of trying out what some 'list' says is supposedly "the best." Just enjoy yourself.

    Hi All,

Just a follow up on my trip. I decided to cancel my walking tour and do my own walking tour based on going to Augustiner, Weihenstephaner, and Georgebraeu.

It was a beautiful sunny spring day about 58-60 degrees F. Perfect for outdoor cafes. I started at Alaxenderplatz, the TV tower, Town hall, etc then to Weihenstephaner. Had lunch with a Helles, a Hefeweizen, and a Dunkel. ALL were Excellent.

Next I headed down Unter den Linden and a few sites along the way. I got thirsty (big surprise) and stopped at Augustiner on Gendarmenmarkt. Had another Helles, an Edeloff (sp??), and a Dunkel. Again ALL were excellent.

Unfortunately neither restaurant took American Express. At that point I had run out of Euros so I didn't make it to Georgebraeu. All in all it was a very enjoyable day.

Id Like to thank everyone for your input on my excursion. I am due to go back to Germany in May. I will be visiting multiple cities for supplier audits ... I can wait.

    Thanks Again,
    Helix

Andreas Bogk now, after almost two years of developing and waiting, is selling his Berliner Weiße officially. I have 10 bottles of batch #27, but that's it. He is still working with a very small equipment.

Ditto. We are doing a rest day in Berlin next month, on our bike ride from Bamberg to Rostock (with a little cheating by train over the hills  ) It's been 3-4 years since I was last there...

Any chance you'll be passing through Singen and stopping at Brauerei Schmitt? (I'd probably never make it outside of Oberfranken...too many good places to stop along the way!)
