I've been seeing "70 minute boil" listed in many beer recipes.

Is this the same thing as saying "60 minute boil, starting from the hot break" (which presumably happens 10 minutes or so in, thus the 70 minutes), or is it really just a 70 minute boil?

While I'm here, can I assume that the boil time listed in recipes always starts after the hot break?

    Thanks y'all...

I time a boil from when the first bubbles break the surface.

Crackerbarrel, yes, I think you are correct, they are accounting for the hot break. I always boil for 70 minutes but usually add my first hop charge at the 60-minute mark. Probably doesn't matter, I could just do both for 60 or 70. Bottom line is that 10 minutes really just doesn't matter all that much.

OldSock....if you are the Mad Fermentationist, I actually asked this question right after looking at your "Real IPA recipe" on your blog about an hour ago.

I haven't even brewed anything yet and I still love your site (hopefully brewing my first all grain batch next wknd).

If you are not the Mad Fermentationist....then have a nice day otherwise.

I often boil for 70-75 minutes to let the break settle down before the hops go in at 60 minutes (if those are the first charge).

My 90 minute boils for lagers with a large amount of Pils malt are similar, as the wort goes for 30 minutes before the 60 minute addition goes in.
