Hey everyone, I have a pumpkin ale that was in primary for 4 weeks and secondary now for 4 weeks due to having issues with a kegerator. Is this to long? I'm new to brewing. Is there a cutoff to go off of? Thanks!
If you left the trub behind in the primary, and if your secondary has minimal head space for air to touch your beer, you'll be okay. It's not a great situation, but your beer should not be ruined.
The fact that you transferred the beer off the yeast cake into a secondary permits the beer to be 'stored' for a longer period of time. Folks who brew beers like sours 'store' the beer in a secondary for extending periods of time (e.g., a year). I would recommend that you package your Pumpkin Ale at your earliest opportunity. I am uncertain how long the spice flavor profile stays stable. Cheers!
If it's a higher abv pumpkin ale then there is nothing wrong with a 1-month, 2-month, maybe even 3 months of conditioning in secondary. Since it's off the initial yeast cake it'll be fine in there for a while. And, since it sounds like you're kegging it, there's no need to worry about yeast viability for bottle conditioning.
