Going through my things and trying to organize all my stuff for an upcoming move, I came accross an 8-year-old expired 1L can PAULANER. This was in a gift set with a 1L mug celebrating 200 years of Oktoberfest back in 2010. I will open this as soon as I get the chance but has anyone got any experience with this type of beers and how long they are good for?

I don’t have high hopes for this one. It hasn’t been stored properly. It was a kept at a temperature of 73 degrees so I’m expecting a rather bad experience... Perhaps being in a can helps a bit. We shall see...

I'd say your expectations seem like they are well placed. Let us know how it is once you crack it!

8 years is a long time even for a strong hoppy beer, both of which this is not. Definitely take a taste because you never know, but I'd expect it to be oxidized and flat tasting.

Are you familiar with the term 'drainpour'??

Second on the "flat tasting." Even if it's still carbonated, the overall flavor will either be kind of blah or have an odd, not pleasant sort of caramel character.

Haha! It is indeed. Tonight I will crack it open... I just put it in the fridge to cool it a bit. Maybe a few minutes in the freezer as well before the big moment...

I would definitely try it, and you should definitely go into it with an open mind. There’s a pretty good chance that it won’t be very good, but if everyone tells you that it’ll be bad, then the beer will have little chance with you regardless. To add a little positivity, I’ve had Paulaner Oktoberfest Marzen that was a few years old and it wasn’t bad. Similar to you, I’ve also had a beer that nobody here would consider a candidate for aging that was 8 years past the best by date... and it was great. And I’m not insensitive to issues with old beer. Yours is a long shot, but try it. There’s also a law around here that if you make threads like this one then you have to post your reactions to the beer after you’ve had it. Don’t break the law.

Well I’ll be damned! This was a shock for me. Yes the beer was a bit flat but nothing like I expected!!! There was still carbonation in the beer, I would say light to medium (I tried to capture it in the photo). Smell was soft (obviously faded from the years) but quite pleasant. Starts off rather sweet and finishes with a light bitterness on the aftertaste with hints of citrus.

I could tell this was not a fresh beer but definitely a very pleasent experience overall (given that this beer has been “expired” for 7-8 years and it was not stored properly)

There’s also a small video i made which you can see here (ye ye I know about the pour... but I only have 2 hands and didn’t really think this through )
