Yeah, I think you might have read my post wrong... or maybe I wrote it awkwardly - but we're on the same page. I agree about the yeast.

And I agree, Olde School could and should be so much better. I have always wanted to love it and get excited each time it's released. But it's always a little disappointing, especially for the price.

Makes me start thinking about what I'm going to have for 60 in a year and a half. Not too early to start planning.

Looks like a fun and tasty month! My favorite barleywine is JW Lees Harvest Ale, although aged Old Stock and Third Coast are damn tasty too.

My first reaction was, "Since when is Gulden Draak a Barley Wine?" But you did include the disclaimer "or related beer". :stuck_out_tongue:

Every year I get a case of Mother of All Storms from Pelican in Oregon (a Christmas gift from my wife and one of my favorite Barleys), and every year I crack one of those bottles on Christmas day. Pelican can't ship to PA because of the antiquated liquor laws so I always have the case shipped to my parents house in Indiana and they re-ship to me. Well, evidently this year, UPS and FedEx is being an uber pain in the butt and interrogated my parents when they tried to ship at either place and denied both times. What a crock of !@#$. So for now, I won't be seeing that case until next Summer when we go home again. However, I'm not going to let FedEx / UPS squash my Christmas tradition, I'll be cracking a vintage bottle of MOAS instead and enjoy it with a huge smile on my face  while tempted to make other gestures in the process!:grinning:

Foret de Troncais American Barleywine from Mikkeller coming in at a whooping 19.3%! This barleywine is unlike any I've ever had before! Huge prune juice nose and tastes of a sweet madeira wine. And I'm talking big dark fruits here! It's really suprising how much I like this one right now!

I'm glad you will still get to have that beer on Christmas anyway - a great tradition (and a great wife!).

I'll explain the Gulden Draak. The brewer labels this beer a "dark triple" but has also referred to it as a barley wine. This can be an indication of brewers using the term very loosely, or an indication that "we" use the term too rigidly (or both). Either way, this month provides me with a nice context to have some beers that many would consider barley wines and others that might exist on the edge. It made sense to include one offering from Belgium. I've never had Gulden Draak after having a barley wine the day before. It's a good opportunity all things considered. If I can find a bottle of De Dolle Stille Nacht (a Christmas beer from Belgium), I will include it as well. I didn't go so far as to include an Eisbock, but maybe it's not a bad idea. On the notion of when a beer is one thing and not another, I think that bourbon barrel aged barley wines become a bit of something else too.

Grabbed these today. Thanks to everyone for recommending Insanity and Bernese. Thanks the @jzeilinger for making me remember that I should look for another Belgian and German beer (a lager, gasp, that beer might be as old as dirt... but the group was so US-centric). I've pretty much decided to not pay attention to how many of these I drink. If I go beyond December, so be it. Very happy that I was able to buy a six pack of Ballantine Burton Ale. I've got my eye on three other beers to buy at the moment. @TongoRad , thanks for bringing up Stingo. I would have bought one today if I found one.

Sherry-Aged JW Lees rocks. If you're looking for good German options, I consider Uerige Doppelsticke to be a "German Barleywine."

Definitely a hesitant like post, but such a nice one in memory of a loved one, it had to be liked, despite the circumstance.

I've had a bad bottle where I can say the IPA side can show its ugly side, at least. Truthfully, I rarely grab bottles of this, but (if not obvious), a staple when I hit the brewery's local restaurants. When enjoying it there, I rarely think of it as an IPA; not sure I see it as a barleywine either. Maybe American strong ale? Mildly pointless distinct and regardless, glad to see it included in this fun thread.

The one. The only. MOAS! 2015. It's a big barrel, high heat, young buck right now. After 2 years, prime time baby!

This beer goes out to @cavedave . Cavedave, remember those good ol' days in the late 70s, when the two of us were rescuing stray dogs on the Kent coast and then popping into London to catch The Damned? Good times.
This beer reminds me of that. It's a nice beer, but I like the personality of their RIS much more. The bourbon character is well done and it provides a nice nuttiness. The head is nice and high.

What a beer. Fantastic dark amber color. Understated (but present) barrel character of wood and bourbon. Would like to try the un-aged beer. Not harsh at all. Great bottle size.

That's more or less the story as Maytag often explained it, such as in this SFGate article from 2003:
Today, the Feds allow either "BARLEY WINE ALE/BARLEY WINE STYLE ALE" pg. 4-4 and, though it's not listed, obviously also the combined "barleywine".

Indeed I do, hard days chasing strays, great nights drinking cask .

Kept one of those dogs, as you remember, and it came with me when we split up, and I took off for Addis Ababa, you to Tierra Del Fuego.

Never told you this, but the poor fellow was stolen from me some years later, and ended life as Ethiopian dog stew. Every time I crack a Dog's Bollocks I too think back to those days with fondness, and sadness as well.
