    hey all,

sorry to add a possibly duplicate thread but a quick search didn't turn up the specific answers I was looking for.

Anywho, I'm going to be in Pittsburgh for a couple days and my itinerary will be a trip to PGP Paints Arena one night and a trip to Brew Gentlemen the next day. We won't have a ton of extra time so I was hoping for one brewery recommendation in the area (or along the way) to each. I'm pretty much a beer omnivore so I'm mostly curious about who has the best/most interesting beer and/or the coolest taproom rather than needing to search out any particular style.

PGP Paints Arena: It doesn't look like there's anything walkable from here but I see a ton of options a short drive away. If you could do a concert pre-game at one of them which would you choose? Extra points to any place that would allow you to easily hop a bus/subway to the arena.

    Brew Gentlemen:
It looks like Voodoo is roughly along the way from downtown Pittsburgh and they seem to get good word on threads here. Is that the no-brainer choice or is there anything else worth considering?

Thanks much folks! I look forward to driving your completely inexplicable roads and bridges again soon

Voodoo is definitely your best bet, especially if you want to stay close to Brew Gentlemen. I would definitely hit up both as they are in the top 3 of Pittsburgh IMO (along with Dancing Gnome). Are you going during the day or at night? Braddock (BG) and Homestead (Voodoo) aren't in the greatest of areas so I would at least be mindful of that.

There isn't really a great option near PPG. Some thoughts...

    - Southern Tier in the North Shore - you can park over there and walk to PPG... a bit of a walk (25-30 minutes) but it may save time getting out of the concert anyway (versus getting out of the PPG or downtown parking lots). Beerhead is a bar over there too that has a ton of beers. You could take an uber too.

    - City Works (Market Square) - fun area of town and a ton of beers (but not a brewery). You can hit up a famous Primanti's sandwich in market square as well. 15-20 minute walk from there, a little more manageable.

    - If you have more time (sounds like you don't), I would hit the route 28 corridor (northeast of the city) with Dancing Gnome and Hitchhiker in Sharpsburg and Draai Laag and Grist House in Millvale. All 4 have really cool spots - Hitchhiker just moved into a historic old brewery (Fort Pitt), Draai Laag specializes in sours.

    - Another option could be to hit up Lawrenceville. Very trendy area with 3 breweries (Hop Farm, Roundabout, and the recently opened Eleventh Hour) - 10-15 minute uber ride to get downtown from there. Lots of food options there as well. These are all close to the 4 aforementioned breweries as well.

Here's a recent article that hits on several of the breweries I've mentioned:

Thanks man that's exactly the info I was hoping for! And my time budget may not end up quite as cramped as I'm planning for, so the additional suggestions are welcome too.

Along with @spirkinator's excellent recommendations, you could always pregame over on East Carson St. before hitting up PPG Paints Arena. The South Side is a short Uber ride or a medium sized walk from The Paint, and there are LOTS of great bars over there with some (like Carson St. Deli, Piper's Pub, and Fathead's) that have a LOT of locals on tap.

Good thoughts @EvenMoreJesus - love Piper's and Fathead's and definitely an easy uber ride to PPG from there as well. The Urban Tap is another solid open down there in the South Side too.

Yeah, Dancing gnome isn't far from the city, and you can also hit up Hitchhiker which is a short walk away from dancing gnome. Agree with everyone about the BG and Voodoo being in not the safest areas. Southern Tier would be a good idea since it is close. You can always take the Trolley, for free, from there to the PPG arena.

I'm headed to PNC Park next week and staying in I guess the Station Square area. Is it safe to walk across to PNC from there? Says it's a mile walk across the river. Are there any can't miss beer spots on the way or near the stadium?

If you're staying in Station Square, just take the Gateway Clipper over to PNC. I mean, you COULD walk, but it's a hike and a Clipper ride is pretty cool. Also, if staying in Station Square, you're a medium-sized, but direct, walk from the very cool bars that I mentioned above.

It's safe to walk, but as mentioned above, pretty far. You could also take the T from the Station Square stop over to the North Side stop. I'd get a beer over by the stadium before hand (Beer Heads, Southern Tier) and then go to Fat Heads/Pipers in South Side after that game. Would be a short uber to/from South Side from your hotel and also not a bad walk.

PGH is a city that's easy to drive in and easy to park in...since it's not that big it doesn't take much time to get to any one spot in the city

if looking to take stuff home, may want to look into what days Dancing Gnome will be doing can releases while there...I think they always or usually do two releases per week and when I went I hit them up back to back, Wednesday and Thursday

no line the first day and short line the second day

out of all the places I tried when there I liked dancing Gnome the best

I messed up. We are staying Downtown but I'm guessing all the suggestions apply. Was thinking of checking out The Yard and Proper Brick Oven and Tap Room. Thoughts? Thanks!

If you're staying downtown, you can definitely walk to the game. I'd highly recommend proper, really good pizza and usually a really good taplist with a good amount of local beers. If you're going for dinner on a weekend though, it can get very busy.

The Yard has a good taplist but I don't think there food is as good. Also Downtown with good beer are Sienna Mercato, Condado, Harris Grill, Pork and Beans.

Just thought I would tag onto this thread with a quick question of my own....

I am in Pittsburgh tonight and wanted to get out to Brew Gentlemen or Dancing Gnome for good local IPA's. But it seems both are closed. So new plan...

Any good suggestions for Downtown where I can get local IPA's and maybe watch MNF?

Where are you staying downtown? Do you have a car?

No car but suppose I can Uber. Staying at Hotel Monaco. First time so I do not know the city.

The best options for you are probably Southern Tier on the Northshore or head over to East Carson St./Southside, as The Yard, which is close to you, is closed on Mondays. If you choose the latter, I'd suggest either The Urban Tap or Piper's Pub.
