Here's a video I cut for my friend last year. He's a comedian and takes a tour through Modern Times brewery in San Diego with the owner. Some pretty funny moments and really good commentary on the state of beer. He coins the term, IPA Zombie. Check it out.

I stopped by Modern Times after it first opened up. Very friendly people and staff!

I've loved everything I've had from Modern Times... I really wish they would make it out of SoCal!

Nice video! I too, love almost everything I've tried from Modern Times. However isn't it a bit hypocritical to mock IPA Zombies when two of your four flagship beers are versions of IPAs?

    Cool video, thanks for sharing

I feel the same way and Blazing World is very hop-forward as well.

not really... many brewers make IPA because they have to, not because they want to. if you're a california brewery, you need an IPA (or several) in order to be profitable. for some it's a love affair, for others is a necessary evil.

Not all hoppy beers are IPAs. My point was that we encounter tons of people who don't even want to drink hoppy beers unless they're labelled "IPA." There's a certain narrowness of thinking sometimes with IPAs that prevents people from trying new things, even if they're only a bit different than what they're used to, hence "IPA zombies." Personally, I think craft beer is more fun when people are eager to get outside of their comfort zones. If a hoppy wheat beer is too far outside of your IPA comfort zone, it's time to challenge yourself a little bit.

    Cheers & thanks,

Yeah life in general is more fun when you're eager to get outside of your comfort zone. I totally got what you were saying and agree. I try and stay away from North Park on Saturdays cause I'm afraid I'll get bitten by an IPA Zombie.

Case in point, your brilliant hoppy wheat, Fortunate Islands. And most of my friends agree that Blazing World was one of your early "non IPA's" that brought hoppy bliss. You guys are great. I still need to get down to your place.

Huge fan of Modern Times. Point Loma was my first stop on a recent trip to SD, and I had a great time. Would love to see some cans on some local shelves here! Until then, I'll just have to enjoy my Blazing World clone attempts...
