So what's a good synonym for "funky" as a descriptor in beer?
I sorta understand what the term means, I just want an alternative to use in describing a beer that has a lot of funk. Or maybe an object that smells or tastes "funky"... The issue has been nagging me because I want to translate that descriptor into Spanish, but have been unable to come up with an acceptable term. Any ideas?

Funk can mean it smells like strong cheese, a barn, almost moldy, tart, or a bunch of other things. I don't really know of a good single word to use as a synonym though. I think 'funk' is an overused word on BA and people use it to mean a lot of different things.

It's generally used to indicate the presence of the barnyard/horseblanket quality of brettanomyces- so maybe come up with something along those lines.

Saying a beer smells funky is the same as saying that it smells fruity. It's difficult to think of another a generalised synonym. I can think of a few, but they don't really mean exactly the same.

    Acrid / Peculiar / Stinky / Gamy / Malodorous / Pongy / Seamy?

poco convencional? but really "funky" is the best descriptor of the wide range of smells and flavors it can describe.

Week-old nachos? Lather from the winner of the Kentucky Derby? Puts the "bleu" in bleu cheese? Like someone played "will it blend" with an old leather-bound book from a library prone to flooding?

depends on the type of funk... i use "earthy" for the musty barnyardy stuff, for the more straight up sour stuff i try to equate it to a particular fruit (i.e. sour cherry, tart lemon, granny smith apple, sour grapes, etc.)... for that subtle bretty ipa thing i use things like spicy, herbal or floral kinda goes hand in hand with the type of hops used.
