Farmy, Barnyard, Horse Blanket...all terms that I would equate with the word "funky" when applied to beer or other food/drink.

usually Musty or wild... depends on what you're describing.

Had someone ask me today about a beer and I described it as a super "danky" IPA.... Don't wanna start my own thread, but I had no real explanation for this guy as to what "danky" meant. How would you describe that one?

The smell that came from the freezer in our camper when we opened it this weekend and discovered I had inadvertantly left ice cream in there over the winter (and spring)?

Actually, "Bubonic Plague" would be a more accurate description of the odor that greeted us.

    Yuck cubed.

Barnyard/horse blanket are still somewhat vague, complex terms for most people. I like to use more directly connotative words. To me, brett derived funk=Hay, mushrooms, manure, wood(cedar specifically), aspirin(bitter chalky pill, related to latex/bandaid), fresh mold, old socks, certain aged cheeses. I think the bleu cheese/foot urine funk comes primarily from bacteria like lactobacillus, pediococcus, etc but when combined with brett(as often happens) a complex "funkiness" that combines these attributes leads to flavors that are difficult to pin down and describe. If some cat pissy/onion-garlicky hops are thrown in, it becomes even harder to find specific flavors to understand what is happening in your mouth. That's why I love "funky" beer. I find that seeking out beer that has one specific "Funkifying" agent like brett, bacteria, whatever, and reading about that agent while consuming the beer can be very helpful in making sense of these beers and unique flavors.

I should be over it by now but "horse blanket" still makes me chuckle.

Dig this, I was gonna make that joke except I would have said Boots Collins because the funk is on the one and Boots Collins is always on the one, baby.
