Love Fullers but my bottle shop just raised the price on a 6 pack to $ 13 (had been $ 11). At that price I can only justify the expense a few times a year.

Any new BA who is seriously interested in educating their palate must at least try Fuller's ESB, London Porter and London Pride. If it is bottled, drink it as fresh as you can find. If possible go for the draft. Cask would be the best!

Yes, the American craft beer scene is just killin' it now with alot of exciting, innovative beer, but..."you gotta know the rules before you can break'em". Do yourself a favor and (re)visit these classics from Fuller's.

I think it sucks that they went to 4 packs, but love me some London Pride

Fuller's ESB right from the cask in London is what got me into craft beer.

I couldn't drink enough of that stuff and totally understand why ice cold isn't really a good thing for beer...at least good beer.

People acknowledge that they're mediocre, and like them specifically for that mediocrity? Fair enough.

Chiswick bitter is a great session ale which is not always on in Fullers pubs. I actually prefer it over London Pride.

Just in case you didn't read my posts properly, or I wasn't clear:

My point is that on BA, Sam Smiths is often seen as the standard-bearer for British brewing (mostly thanks to the fact that it's relatively available in the US). IMO they are a very average brewer when viewed in the larger context of UK breweries, and I think most British BAs would agree. Or at the very least they could list numerous other breweries in the UK that they would consider better.

If by old school, you mean enjoying and appreciating well-brewed examples of classic styles (i.e. a good bitter, mild etc), then count me as old school too. I'm just saying that when I'm doing my old school drinking back in the UK, it won't involve SS.

Sam Smiths do a few decent bottles that look great and they clearly have excellent distribution in the states

They are known here as being probably the brewery with the cheapest tied estate, treat their estate workers/landlords badly and their owner/head guy is supposed to be a bit of a knob. And their keg offerings are cack

Although I would probably prefer it if they opened up some pubs up here rather than Marstons who seem to be expanding into scotland . They are still pretty low in my estimation compared to other English regionals

Lovely stuff and I much prefer it to London Pride. London Pride you can find pretty well everywhere , Chiswick is somewhat elusive !

I'm a huge fan. I've also been pretty lucky that I haven't run into many stale imports over the years either.
London Pride is as good as beer gets.

Anyone know how far out from brewing the expiration dates are for ESB and London Pride?

I've always assumed a year, but I don't remember where I got that from.

I could have read/heard it somewhere, or it's just the default assumption I have for most European imports.

Going by my initial post in this thread a few years ago, it would be an absolute minimum of 8 months... which makes me think that @AlcahueteJ might be right.

Fuller's makes some pretty awesome brews. Have not seen any ESB around here though.

    Cheers!
