Thinking about doing an "A" hop IPA (Apollo, Ahtanum and Amarillo..any others?) and I'm looking for Extract recipes. Love to be in the 6-6.5% abv range and I love BIG hop aroma and flavors so I'm not against dropping a ton of hops in. Just not entirely sure about how to put together the best recipe to highlight these hops.

    Thanks! Happy Brewing.

There is Azacca, Styrian Aurora, UK Admiral.

    Yakima Valley has Armadillo.

I would use Apollo sparingly and at the end of the boil or flameout. A little bit goes a long way

Consider this -- too many hop flavors that are not complimentary will probably spoil your effort. Besides a mish-mash of hop flavors, you also stand a chance of having your beer be way too unbalanced and no malt flavor to speak of.

If you go ahead with your plan, you can use any IPA recipe that you have that has your target 6.8 ABV, and use the hop and malt ingredients in the same general ratio, more or less depending on how balanced you want your IPA to be.

I would consider using the amarillo more generously (I say that based on experience) and apollo sparingly (I say that based on having seen the comments like jlordi12's more than once). I'd use a small amount of a clean bittering hop to get up to the desired IBUs and hit the rest of your hop blend late (10-flameout). Can't say about the ahtanum, haven't tried it and don't even have any hearsay to repeat.

I'd use an extract recipe for a good IPA that you've used before that has similar parameters, and has characteristics you might like with a different hop blend.

If the name works...fine, but brewing the beer as an afterthought usually doesn't work, IMHO.

This plus 1000. For instance, I really wanted to brew something I could call "Electrified Hate" after a line in a Municipal Waste song. I thought "What is hate?" Hate is for someone who has a black heart, and it is also bitter, and strong, so the beer would have to be black, bitter, and strong. This narrowed down the prospects a bit; either a well attenuated RIS or a big Black IPA. Electrified- it would have to have some serious energy! Either coffee in the RIS or some serious zip in the flavor. I'm not going to drink a batch of RIS quick enough for the coffee flavor to stick around, so a zippy BIPA would do. My personal hate is brawny, not fruity, so I wanted more in the way of spicy, piney hops; not fruity hops. So I went with Columbus, Chinook, and Simcoe and turned it into a pine bomb with the slightest hint of roast and a touch of burnt sugar. Still could use some work the next time I brew it, but it was a good beer that lived up to the name.

You could do an ASS beer. Apollo, Summit and Sorachi Ace together would get you there.

Kidding. I would just roll with the hop combo you have. Apollo early in the boil will get dank quickly so use late and sparingly. Amarillo and Ahtanum coooould play nicely although I think Amarillo is going to get kind of lost. Use the lightest DME you can find. Add 1/3 at the beginning of the boil and the other 2/3 at 10-15 minutes. No need to steep any crystal malts if you were thinking of going that route. Hope it turns out great.

Thank you everyone for your responses. My plan was to use Amarillo heavy, but having never used Apollo or Ahtanum, was curious how and where to use them. Not really aiming on making a beer off a name as much as i see so many "C" hop IPAs and I was going to experiment into the A hops. Isn't brewing beer about experimentation?
