I am taking German 101 at the community college. Besides learning the language, the class also focuses on German culture. Each of us has to do a small project in that regards. I have chosen to give a short presentation on Bamberg. My first choice was to brew a German beer, but some of the students are underage.

Anyhow, I have two pictures from Schenkerla that I need help translating and a couple of buildings that I need help identifying.

    I get:

    Stupid ones run,
    Wise ones wait,
    While go
    In the garden

The third line is questionable and I'm not really sure what the first word is.

for this I get "Go your way and let them talk today" but I'm having difficulty reading the second line.

    A close up:

Third line would be weise gehen, "wise ones walk", with klug being a synonom for wise, although the text suggests a hierarchy of sorts. In Swedish the words are klok and vis respectively, I suppose klok is more down to earth whilst vis is more elevated, although I'd use the two words interchangably. Second line in the second pic would be und lass die leute reden, "and let the people talk".

    So,

    Stupid ones run,
    Wise ones wait,
Wise ones walk in the garden

    and

Go your way and let the people talk

I was reading leute as "heute"

    Danke

Is this by the Pelikan? I know the building, I think, but not the name. Perhaps @FrankenBier knows?

Sorry, the translation is slightly off.
    It should be:
    The dumb ones run,
The SMART ones wait, (Klug means smart, not wise… Weise means wise)
and the wise go into the (bier)garden.

    The 2nd is:
    Go your (own) way,
    And let the people talk.

Thanks, while looking up St. Stefan, I realized that one of those pics is actually a different church, St. Jakobs.

Yeah, St Jacobs is on the way to Michealesberg Abbey. Looks like this inside [IMG] A lot of white. Maybe look here? I took a lot of pictures, and I think I recalled where I was. For the most part:grinning:

This is the Justizgebaeude, seen from across the Rhein-Main-Donau Kanal...probably from Kunigundendamm (on the way to Keesmann and Mahr's from downtown?)

Stadtarchiv, down by the Residenzschloss Hotel (yep, near Pelikan).

I bow back to the guy brewing Schell's. Through the generosity of @Chaz and @grantcty I was able to try a good assortment of y'all's beers recently. You guys are truly an American treasure. Hope to visit someday....

Hahaha. Thanks. We do what we do. Like my buddy Jay Mission (RIP) once said...it's not always the easiest way or the quickest way. It's simply our way.

So totally not the right thread, but I'm too lazy to start a new one. Some thoughts on Bamberg.

I love this city so much. Not only the beer, but the history and the people are pretty cool too.

Fassla: Always solid, beer is good, and the food also. Good Schwemm if you just want a beer

Spezial: Still my favorite. Beer and food are awesome. Actually had a male server joke around with us, which hey, in Germany? Yeah. He is cool, and he's been there forever. Food is great. Beer is great, and I had them all, from Ubier to Bock.

Keessmann: Frederick has retired, and I don't know the new brewmaster. The hops in Herren Pils are not as prevalent as the last time I was there (2008 or so). Still a great beer, and a great brewery.

Mahrs: Never been my favorite, Had good and bad there, this time all good. The Schwemme is awesome, though. That weird off kilter hall...

Schlenkerla: Always solid. Bock beer was good, I preferred it (as always) to the Maerzen. Met someone that worked there, and the claim is they are supposed to be rude. Don't know if it's true...whatever. The food is good and I've never had a huge problem there that I wasn't the cause of :grinning: They do let you bring beers outside now...you get charged a pfand( 2 euro) in the Schwemme. It's really random if they charge you or not. My German probably didn't change that much. BTW, the pizza window is still open and the guys running the window are still as cranky as they always were. But hey, it's Bamberg and a slice is 2 euro...

Greifenklau: Solid food, solid beer. I didn't try their new rauch beer, because I had some miscommunication with the server and somehow ended up at the Stammtisch. But it was lunch so no big deal, but still freaked me out a bit, Lagerbier was solid.

We didn't hit Kloisterbrau as I had heard some bad things lately...now I'm wishing I had stopped. It's a beer. What 3 euro? Oh well, my bad,

    David,

    Thanks for your post!

You stated: “The hops in Herren Pils are not as prevalent as the last time I was there (2008 or so).”

Oh no, not Keessmann too!?! Very disheartening news!:slight_frown:

    Cheers!

I've always translated "klug" as "clever" (with "schlau"(?) meaning "smart"), but I bow to the native speakers!

I think I like the translation with clever a bit better.

Stumbled upon this on Wikipedia: the Bamberger Bierkrieg in 1907. A serious boycott over a price raise of 1 Pfennig. Maybe a nice little story for your presentation.

Good stuff. This protest was quoted in the Bamberg daily newspaper, the Fraenkischer Tag, back in 1995 (IIRC), the day after Schlenkerla announced they would no longer be serving the Schnitt. Bamberg takes its beer seriously!

Granted, I hadn't had any Herren Pils in 2008, but I didn't notice any difference between the 2010 and 2013 versions. If it was truly better a few years ago I think my mind might have been blown by it. As it stands, it's my favorite pilsner, period.

What your heard about Klosterbraeu definitely holds true with my experiences. In 2010 the Braunbier, Schwarzbier, and Pils were highlights of our trip. It was the only brewery we ended up going back to over the course of a 2-day short trip and the beers were amazing both times. Both were dry and had a surprising amount of hop character.
However last year the Braunbier and Pils tasted completely different. Both tasted a bit old, cloyingly sweet, and had that "old beer" diacetyl note. The Braunbier was cookie-like, and while the base flavor was still pleasant, it wasn't the same stuff. The pils was simply below average and the butter note was more pronounced. Over the course of 3 days, they also had by far the most empty taproom, too.

On the other side of the coin, Faessla was much improved in the same span of time. Gold pils was nearly as good as Herren and the lagerbier was extra rich.
