I went to Portugal last week and was sampling some of the local spirits at a really cool restaurant we found. My favorite turned out to be an Aguardente (this version was essentially a brandy) called SR&F and it was served to me in a crazily huge snifter that was meant to really concentrate the aroma as much as possible. It was a pleasant drinking experience, though it could be argued that it actually concentrated the alcohol vapors a little *too* strongly.

However, my first thought was actually "I'd really love to drink a beer out of one of these damn things!" So upon returning home I sought out and found some 34 ounce snifters that were very similar in size and style to the ones I had before. It cannot be argued that these glasses are practical, and I'm almost certain to break them in short order, but they do indeed make for a pretty fantastic aroma experience with beer - especially since you can put nearly your whole face into them. I kind of love them, even if they are sort of ridiculous as an everyday drinking vessel.

The pics below show full 12 and 16 oz pours in the glass so you can get a sense of just how big the darned thing is. Has anyone else ever tried these or similar oversized glasses to really push the envelope of capturing as much of a beer's nose as possible? I can't help but think of our resident Mr. Horzempa's former avatar that was along these lines

I have quite an old one that used to belong to my grandfather for his whiskey. I typically save it for special beers, and yes, it is always a fantastic experience! It really does a perfect job of capturing the aroma with tons of room for it to expand inside the vessel.

    LOL!

Now you are making me question my decision to 'upgrade' my avatar.:flushed:

I don't have anything that big. I have a couple of ~Imperial pint tulips that do a good job.

BTW, that ain't no "modest glass" you got there!

I bought a 20oz snifter (not realizing it was a 20oz) when I first started buying beer glasses. I've used it a few times for some big stouts, and it definitely helps increase my perception of the aroma. Which then helps with enjoyment of the flavor as well.
I think I prefer the smaller snifters most of the time, but drinking out of the larger ones makes for a nice sipping session every once in a while.

That sounds like it's probably a good compromise size for getting the aroma boost without looking like a jabroni drinking out of a fishbowl.

    Yeah, me too.

A couple of days ago I ordered a Schemp's logo T-shirt and a 'light bulb' went on and a new avatar 'appeared'.

    Cheers!

I have a couple 23 ounce snifters (non-branded, just plain), and I use them quite a bit. They're one of my favorite glasses, and I think I bought them for just $2.99 or something like that so they were defintely worth the money to me as they work great. I'd probably buy a larger one depending on the price if I could find one somewhere!

I used to purposefully seek out oversized snifters at thrift stores. After a while I gave up though because of the following reasons:

    1. The first one I owned which could hold more than a 750 mL mysteriously disappeared
    2. I rarely used the ones I purchased after that one
    3. They always ended up breaking on me

Now my Duvel tulip serves the same basic function and it can hold a 16oz can with some room to spare for head, so I'm good

Sometimes it would be interesting to have one that would hold a bomber.

My wife found this monstrosity at a home decor store. No Idea how many ounces, but way over 30.

Whilst I would like one, just for the quantity factor, aroma is the least important aspect for me. No way I'm sticking my face in there unless I got a snorkel. I love visuals, and one of those puppies full of my favorite local brew would certainly be a time saver, I would also bust that sucker too damn soon.

    Carry on good sirs.
