My wife is a huge fan of IPAs and IIPAs, some of her favorites being Abrasive, Double Trouble, Sucks, HT, Furious, Myrcenary, Odell IPA, Nugget Nectar, ZD, etc. (let's just count the last two as IPAs for sake of the post).

Recently, however, she has discovered a couple IPAs she cannot stand, all for the same reason, and we cannot figure out why. I am guessing that the problem lies in the hop/malt varieties used but am far from confident that that is the case. So here is the question...

My wife loves the beers listed above but cannot stand Enjoy By (4.1.13) and Rampant. She has expressed distaste for other Stone IPAs before, but I'm unsure if it is for the same reason. Is there some unique property in these two specific beers that I could hope to avoid in the future?

Cheers and thanks for any input.

I haven't reviewed Rampant yet but the bottle I had did not please me. IIRC, it had a melon like flavour that turned me off.

I'd guess first it's the hops. Check the Stone web site. For many Beers they list the hops used. If there are one or more in common.... Test by finding some other brewery using the same hop(s) for a beer and sample.

How anyone who likes DIPA, can hate Enjoy By is beyond me. Especially with some on the list that she likes. I'm baffled.

Stone IPA is harsh but the Stone Ruination IPA is not as bad.. Give her an Alaskan IPA and I bet she falls in love with it.

    Hide and watch

I'm also very confused how an individual's taste buds can act in such an individual manner. That's like, violating science.

I do see your point though. It's pretty uncommon.

She does like the Alaskan ipa a lot. For the last three months we've been living on abrasive, sucks, and myrcenary. Now that abrasive and sucks are harder to find fresh we've been branching out more, bringing this conundrum to light.

She dislikes Australian hops. Galaxy etc. pineapple/stone fruit with a whiff of onion grass. Both those beers employ it.

Rampant uses Mosaic, Calypso and Centennial hops.

Enjoy By uses Calypso during the mash; Super Galena hop extract for bittering; Simcoe, Delta, Target, and Amarillo for flavor; Motueka, Citra, and Cascade for aroma; Nelson Sauvin and Galaxy for dry hopping

You didn't say what she didn't like about the beers. I'm guessing they were too bitter. Both breweries tend to make IPAs that are more bitter than the others you mentioned.

We were leaning towards the Calypso hops being the problem when we were first investigating this, since my wife loves Centennial and Mosaic but we weren't certain about what was used in the Enjoy By.

For the longest time I loved most all ipa's and double ipa's but hated sculpin. I swear I tried it a couple times in the past only to keep finding a dislike. I recently retried a really fresh version and liked it. I think it was either an old bottle or my tastes have evolved to like the type of hops they use. That's my theory.

kingofhop enjoys many IPAs, but not all IPAs. kingofhop also enjoys referring to himself in the third person on the Internet, because kingofhop does not get to do that very much, in real life.

That's funny you say that about Sculpin because I had it last night and it didn't seem like much more than an average IPA....although I had it in between a hopslam and sucks.

You may or may never figure out the reason. You'd have to know all the ingredients for starters and then maybe the brewing process. I wasn't a big fan of enjoy by either, but I love Ruination when it's fresh. Their regular IPA is quite good when fresh also. On the other hand, I don't like Union Jack, but I like Double Jack and I don't like Alesmith IPA which everyone seems to love. I can't figure out what it is, so I just don't buy them anymore. I think NN is meh, but think Maine Beer Co.'s Lunch is phenomenal. Who knows?

I bought another bottle today to review it and give it another chance.
