I will be flying into Boston on the Thursday before EBF and staying at the nearby Hilton (Back Bay).

I assume traffic will vary depending on my arrival time for a taxi, but would the metro be a better choice?

I always take the metro (we call it the T) to the airport. Goggle maps has transit apps to tell you how beat to get there.

What time are you getting in?

Blue line from airport into the city but then you have to switch to green line (closer to Hilton, slower, less frequent, smaller) or orange line (farther from Hilton, faster, more frequent, larger)

Taking the T with luggage can be a chore, especially depending on what time you are arriving/departing. I can't imagine a cab from the airport to your hotel being more than $30 with tip.

Just the taxi toll is $5.50 for the tunnel...so you are probably around $35.00. I will not use the T...even with a gallon of hand sanitizer.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet, but this really helped iron out my options (and relative cost).

The EBF is what I've chosen to do for my bachelor party, so I can't imagine I'll be spending too much of my own money that weekend. I may roll with the cab if its not rush hour (or hours if Boston is anything like DC).

I was basing the $30 estimate off it costing me $30 to get from the airport to Somerville. I figured the Hilton was closer to the airport.

You're unfortunately going to a bit of an awkward spot from the airport. The cab will get you there much quicker (so long as it isn't rush hour), but you'll pay for it. Figure $40 after tip.

As a good rule of thumb, the T is great if you don't have to change lines, but makes for a very slow trip if you do. And you'll need to go shuttle bus, to blue, to orange to get to your hotel from the airport.

Sneaky hybrid option... take the Silver Line to South Station (subway/bus with mostly dedicated lanes, takes about 20 minutes, runs every 20) and then grab a cab right outside South Station. That $35 cab ride will go down to about $10. This will also be much quicker than doing the full T run, and the Silver Line has luggage racks whereas the blue/orange do not...

This is a great option. I've used the Silver Line many times and have had no problems. Last time I took a cab from Logan the credit card machine was broken which I didn't find out until the end of the ride.

I am 50/50 on T vs Cab as a travel a lot for work, but a cab from Logan to Brookline/Washington Square all the time for work (even rush hour) and its never been more than $35, so I think $30 is about right to Back Bay.

If you are splitting a cab with others for your bachelor party then definitely do the cab.

This is by far the best option. The Silver Line from the airport gets you downtown for FREE and just as quickly as a cab. Only suckers take cabs from the airport.

I agree that Silver Line to South Station is the best option, but I don't think it's free anymore. I believe the free rides ended on January 6.

UPDATE: I'm wrong. Inbound rides on the Silver Line are still free. I tweeted the MBTA and they confirmed.

Even if it isn't free, it's only $2...

9 times out of 10 when you get that line the credit card machine is not broken, the cabby just has it turned off. They hate those machines, as they get some kind of terrible rate from the company that supplies them, and then they also have a delay on when they get paid. I enjoy the convenience of credit cards, but it's a bit of a scam by the city of Boston to require them through. Even when the machine is working, the stories you'll get trying to get you to pay cash...

I always pay with cash, and I'm sure the cab drivers appreciate it. That said, I've never been in a cab with anyone where the machine was broken, but have heard about it. I was trying to fall asleep this past summer and these girls who live down the street from me ended up stiffing the cab driver because his machine was broken. That whole deal sucks for them.

Rates were raised to offset the fees from fares using cards...

I'm probably just kind of bitter because of how the story ends. My wife and I took that cab from the airport home from our honeymoon. We were just about out of cash (not enough to cover the fare), so she ran up to grab some of the few hundred we left at home, only to find out we'd be robbed. So the cabby then proceeded to drive me to an ATM so I could pay the $40 or whatever it was.

To keep it beer-related: I took a nap and bought a Speedway Stout when I woke up.

Gotta figure with social media that a ton of people know these days when people are going to be out of town for an extended period of time.
