Hello! I've got a question about some glasses that I couldn't solve with Google. I'm still a bit new to the craft beer scene, and was hoping someone here knew what types of glasses these are:

The one on the right I picked up from the CBC that just opened in town. Didn't have the name posted on the shelf, or when it was rung up. I wanted to have an idea of what beers it was best suited for before putting it to use. The three on the left, the Bud Light, Black Label, and PBR glasses were a gift from my mom, who found them at an antique store. They're cool to have on the shelf, but I was a curious if there was a particular name for either of the two glass styles.

Here's a closeup on the PBR one:

And lastly, here they are next to a standard pint and a Weizen glass, for size reference. You can see they're about 10-12 ounces in capacity, quite small:

Thanks in advance for your help everybody!

    Try these;

Plenty of other sites to guide you. Myself, I don't worry about matching the glass to the beer style - I use goblets for everything. I primarily use a Snörkel goblet but have other brands of goblets which I match to the brewery when I have the right glass. Ironically, I've never had a Snörkel or any Jester King beers, as they don't distribute here.

The link given you by bbtkd gives you a nice visual guide to different styles of glasses. You can also look on this site under Beer 101 for a guide to glassware. On BA we can get pretty geeky about glassware. My own collection is way too big. And, like bbtkd I find myself gravitating to a favorite. I tend to use a glass styled for IPAs whenever I am drinking an IPA,a pale ale, or any hop forward beer. The Bud light glass looks like a shaker pint glass to me - a style you will see at many bars, While not really best for any particular style of beer they are sturdy, feel nice in the hand, and good for a commercial dishwasher.

As has been noted frequently, the names used for various shapes of beer glasses varies by region, manufacturer, brewer, etc.

I'd call the Bud Light a "shell" (that's what AB called it in the 1980s) although with a bit more taper than the traditional shell and the CBC a "goblet" (Libbey, the major US glass mfg., calls many differently-shaped stemmed glass designs by that term, as did AB in the above link).

The Pabst Blue Ribbon and Carling Black Label, while obviously legally licensed, are the sort of thin "novelty" glasses sold in packs in discount stores and 5¢ and Dimes, etc, rather than brewery promotional items or for commercial use in bars. Here's an ad for such glassware with a similar set in the upper right, circa mid-1970s.

(The Black Label glass suggests that set might have originated a bit earlier, likely the 1960s when Carling was still a large national US brewery).

And, yeah, decades later with the set is broken up (some glasses just broken) they do tend to wind up on flea market tables and thrift store shelves.

Looks like the Pabst and Carling glasses might have come from this novelty set, which you could have picked up at the Uniontown, PA Montgomery Ward in July 1973 (and many other fine retailers, no doubt).

(Yeah, seems cheap but according to the BLS, that's equivalent to over $10 today!:astonished: "Special Buy" my ass. I'd have used the money to buy a six of Ballantine Ale and have money left over for a few games of pinball or some payphone calls or something.)

I've noticed that these glasses seem to show up very frequently in pics in the New Beer Sunday thread. Is there a backstory as to why they're so popular given that, as you say, Jester King isn't all that widely distributed?

It is a pretty badass glass so maybe that's the long and short of it.

I believe a certain individual enjoys gifting this glass in beer boxes. More specifically, BIF boxes. Just an observation.

The beers have limited distribution but glasses can be ordered from their gift shop.

Wow, how could I not think to check the website? I feel a bit silly, but I definitely thank you! Though it's odd to see something without a tulip lip being called a tulip glass. Jesskidden identified it as a type of goblet, and Googling a bit further, that seems more accurate - I saw plenty of glasses with that shape for sale under that name. Searching for Belgian tulip glasses just gets me, well, glasses that actually have a tulip shape.

So the Bud Light is a shell, and the other two are novelty glasses. They definitely went with an interesting shape for the novelties, but I'm assuming it's more for style than for function. They're small enough that they'll probably be used more for screwdrivers than for beer . I'm glad to have a bit more info, though. Thanks everyone!

No backstory really, like you say it's a cool glass graphic. There really aren't that many kicking around in the BA forums, just that many of us primarily/only use that glass. I picked up three of them on Ebay, paying way too much. Right now Jester King is selling them 2/$14 plus $10 shipping. And damn - could not resist pulling the trigger on two more just now. What the hell do I need five of them for?

If you go through glasses anything like I do, that's only about 18 months worth, so don't beat yourself up about it

I have had a couple of close calls, but haven't broken a beer glass in the 2 years I've been into craft. But spares are good, I'm due.
