I thought it was something else entirely.

Yes. We bought many rounds of beer for the entire bar at several BeerAdvocate pre-fest parties and gatherings in the past. Miss those days, but not the bar tabs.

Usually beer shots (tasters?) or underbergs, and usually while i'm working behind the same bar. I'd need to score a major life victory in order to start paying for 50 x $16 cocktails that i'm not consuming (people don't order $2 high lifes when its free FYI).

Thought about but never done it. Closest I think I’ll come is getting a round for the bartenders.

Did he say it was worth it? I'd happily cough up a couple hundred bucks if I had a hole ⛳ in one.

I can’t say I’ve technically ever bought a round for an entire bar. I feel as if it’s a complex question in today’s world. Most bars are also in a restaurant, so do you have to buy a round for the entire establishment for it to count? Forget a brewery tap room which can be massive.

I’ve bought so many for so many people though. I typically don’t announce it. I just sneak in and talk to the bartender and slip them my credit card. Or just drop off a Kranz to a table @EnronCFO

I’ve also been on the receiving end of some very nice gestures. So, I like to pay it forward. But like @steveh said, can’t really recall an ENTIRE bar being bought a drink by one person.

At my bachelor party we had enough people to take up the entire bar and the two booths next to it. I picked up that tab, does that count? (I know, that’s not how it’s supposed to work…my friends more than made up for it…I think the bottle of Utopia alone was more than that bill)

...I remember the Avery 'Uncle Jacob' you bought at the Lucky Pie in Denver (more like a bottle share, actually) before we started out on the first BA Denver pub crawl...I also recall the bottle of River North (I can't remember which specific beer) you stuck in my hands as I stumbled out of River North that evening...I don't know if you did that for everyone else that made it to that late night, unscheduled pub crawl last stop, but I thought the beers you bought before and after were very generous on your part...

Back in the day at our neighborhood bars our gang would take turns buying rounds for our group, usually around 5 or 6 people. Of course prices were much different then. I don't recall anyone buying a round for the whole bar. Bars and taverns back then were loaded with patrons.

I think being with a group of friends and trading rounds is a little different than popping for the whole bar. We used to do that all the time.

But this also reminded me of a local we hung out at every Friday for years. We'd often get a round on the house (recognizing our dedicated patronage). I still have a couple of the little wooden coins I never cashed in -- saving for a rainy day.

Back when I was a 5 day a week regular at my local brewery it was a thing that would happen now and again. Sometimes it was just a round of beer shots, sometimes full pints. The other regulars also did it once in awhile. I do miss that dysfunctional family we had at the bartop.

Yeah I've bought the bar around there were usually only 3 or 4 ppl drinking besides me. And it was happy hour, so not that big a lift.

...my recollection of my exploits were that 1) the beer was cheaper - even taking into consideration inflation, and 2) there probably weren't more than 10 -15 people in the place...

Well, my buying a round story is a bit different than some...

Working in Geoje Island, South Korea, is like going back to the 1950's in some ways. There are Cafe American, or Cafe International bars. Which is essentially where all the people from the US and Europe went to, almost all working on the military base there. I was doing a survey on a drill ship being built on the base. Went to a Cafe American bar, me and my coworker try to buy a round just for our work crew. Ended up buying their entire tab (they had been there for hours) and a round for everyone at the bar, including bartenders. Apparently we were suppose to include buying drinks for the wait staff when we ordered, but we didn't get that cue which was a party foul, so the manager just put everything for that couple of hours on our tab ha (or so someone tried to explain to us, still not sure what happened exactly). Ended up with a $600 plus tab, ugh.

Fast Eddies, Springfield Va. about 20 years ago. I want to say around 10 at night. They close at 2 am. Bartender announces that everything is on the house, courtesy of a couple that met there several years before and were on their honeymoon. They bought all existing tabs, including food, plus all food until the kitchen closed at 11, plus all drinks until 2. They did put a sign on the front door saying they were closed and a doorman to not let more in. That was a party, let me tell you...Oh, the place was packed, it always was back in the day.
