It's called jargon. It appears in every industry and every hobby.

Learn it if you like, or just don't worry about it. I think I'll start spelling out acronyms in the military phonetic alphabet. Takes longer and makes it way more confusing/elitist.

Yes, I too had no idea that this forum (the first I've ever created) would stir such passions - but I'm glad it did as it seems like it was a worthwhile debate. My intent was to state an opinion more related to sensible use of acronyms - not to take a hard line position one way or the other. Furthermore, as I alluded to in my original post - I was more or less giving a pass to the trading forums as I've only really dabbled in them myself and as a result, I don't really have the basis from which to make a strong recommendation one way or another - although as supported by the majority of this debate, I do believe they would be more accessible if they were less acronym-centric.

I really appreciate some folks' references to linguistics and language as being relevant, especially as our writing standards continue to devolve as facilitated by the increased real time usage of emails, blogs and texts. These types of technology-enhanced communication, while quick and efficient, are usually inspired by knee-jerk reactions as opposed to well-thought through positions where acronyms and abbreviations, if they are used, are almost always preceded by a spelled-out name. Of course I am not advocating the use of scholarly or technical writing standards in this venue, I am just trying to make an analogy to those principles that seem to work in more time-tested standards of journalism.

In any case, thanks to all the thoughtful responses! It's Saturday night - a good time to quaff a few brews! Enjoy!
