Going to brew NB dead ringer extract. Thinking of adding 1 lb of sugar to bump up ABV and dry it out. Corn sugar, cane sugar or will it ruin it?
It will do what you think it will, bump up ABV and dry it out (compared to a pure malt beer). I would use tabel sugar over corn sugar. Why do you want the ABV bump? It will affect your BU:GU ratio.
Also, keep in mind that when the alcohol level gets too high, it starts to inhibit the yeast's ability to ferment. If you are trying to hit 10% range you need to pitch a lot more yeast so that they will finish fermenting before the rising alcohol level shuts them down.
Since this is your first post, I'm going to guess it's also your first brew. If so, I recommend not adding sugar. I doubt that anybody's first brew has ever been improved by adding sugar to increase ABV (or most things the eager novice good idea machine can come up with).
More Sugar yields more gravity points. More gravity points decreases the effectiveness of hops. I personally wouldn't do it. You'll end up with something in imperial IPA ABV, without the hop presence to make it an Imperial IPA.
You're always better off trying to brew a recipe straight before you put your own swing on it. How do you know the modifications will be beneficial if you don't have a control to base it off of?
you can add whatever you like. it's your beer. it's a bad idea. as others have noted, altering your first beer never works well. you would not add more flour if you were baking your first loaf of bread. this is no different.
I think it is a bad idea to add sugar to this beer. Part of this is personal preference. Deadringer is supposedly an awesone Two-Hearted Ale clone. I never had a Deadringer, but I love Two-Hearted and I've never drunk a Two-Hearted Ale and said to myself "Awesome beer, but I wish it had more kick to it." For me, Two-Hearted is an ideal gravity for an IPA. But, I'm a small guy with a preference for moderate gravity beers. If it's high gravity, I'm one and done, and I often want to drink two beers over the course of a night. Personal preference aside, lots of people add sugar to the beer, for lots of different reasons, with no issues at all. However, I agree with everyone else who suggested that you ought to master some of the basics of brewing before tampering with this aspect of your recipe.
I would agree, not for this one. I usually add Turbinado sugar if I add any. Just did my Cherry Winter Warmer brewday the other day for my second time and it went too perfect (most prepared I've ever been), I tweaked the recipe to keep the same ABV (used a different base malt this time because I've grown to like it more than the one I used the first time) and holllllllly crap the fermentation went nuts, its the first time I've had to use a blowoff tube. Anyways I got sidetracked, if you are doing a recipe/kit especially if its your first one or even first few stick with the original recipe. I veered off only on my second recipe because I wanted to do Midwest's Raspberry Wheat but didn't want to use the stupid extract and wanted to use real raspberries so I took a guess as to how many to use (6lbs for 5 gallons worked perfectly btw).
