As you can probably tell by the title of this thread...I am a complete home brewing noob. I didn't have a hydrometer before fermentation began so i was not able to get an OG reading. I just measured the beer after about 12 days and its at 1.020. Is there any way to get the ABV from that?

Short answer, with an estimated og based on your recipe and a fg you can get a range to go off. But without a lab testing your beer i don't think you'll get closer than an estimate

Nope. To get the ABV you really needed that OG and then use a curve fit to account for the alcohol presence if using a refractometer. Best thing to do now is assume you hit your OG, plug that in, and see what it yields. That should get you in the ball park. At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter...it's just a nice thing to know. Keep on brewing and best of luck!

If you provide the recipe and the exact volume, we can probably give you a good ballpark figure for the ABV.
