So I started adding up the ABV in my beers to see what I will feel like the next morning. Over 30% I am still good but over 50% I need to be careful with time. Does anyone else do this? Right now I am at 22% but thinking of having an 11.5% Barley Wine that would get me to 33.5%.

I cut myself off at 3 no matter the ABV. thats only if I get in rare stuff that Im excited about. Otherwise its 1-2 if I have any.

Yes. Over 30 and I'm careful, 40 is tops. Not sure I could ever get close to 50 and not regret it a LOT the next day.

You need to factor in the ounces also.

I am also 215 pounds. I do for 12 oz servings.

Holding to the most widespread health recommendations, it seems to be max about 12 per day for men. (Using the 1-2 drinks rule, (two servings of wine, two servings of liquor, or two servings of beer(I'm assuming 12 oz's for men)

Assuming a 6% ABV per serving for mid-range craft-beer...that's how I came up with 12...

I like the OP's way of setting the limit though...(adding the ABV w/ each beer)

While I generally drink a couple of 6-8% IPA's a night, I think the health recommendations of 1-2 drinks don't account for this. Take for instance the OP, at ~30%, maybe it's 3 DIPAs...seems ok for some of us, but if they were BMC stuff at 4-5%, that would be around a six pack. No health org. would recommend that. You have to take into account the ABV while drinking.

I definitely keep track. I'm only 24 and go out in the city a fair amount so my totals can sometimes be a bit high.

When I was 200 lbs and a few years younger as a college student, 30% or less and I was pretty good, over 50% definitely requires some recovery time.

Now that I only weigh about 160, After 40% I'm not feeling to good in the am.

Man I feel like an alcoholic in this thread lol, I prefer beer drinker extraordinaire. Also you must take age into the morning after feeling, my only "Good Beer" friends I have are in their 30's, they are absolutely dying the next day when we hang out. I haven't gotten there yet thankfully.

No alcoholics please. Alcohol Enthusiasts only. haha. I am 33 and drink about 2-3 times a week. I am also a die hard cyclist so I burn any calories consumed. Still think that beer is a great recovery drink to loosen the muscles.

I'd feel like an alcoholic if I added up the most I've ever been to. I hit 100 at least once lol (that's how much a case of Natty Light is). The next day was one of the worst of my life. I was 18 and about 145 pounds at the time. These days, I like to stick to no more than 30 based on 12 ounce servings, but typically just drink to 10-15 when I do drink (so 2 beers typically at around 7.5%).

I'm an avid runner and I agree with the calorie point. It's not the calories you should be concerned with though if you're drinking far beyond the recommended alcohol intake limits. Otherwise, I'd drink like a fish.

What do you mean they don't account for this? They do. One IPA is pretty much 2 drinks, or just shy of it. If they're the same in total alcohol volume then the IPA's are just as bad. Alcohol is alcohol. Actually, they're probably worse because it seems to take less time to drink two IPA's than an entire sixpack of BMC - so you're hitting your liver with all of the alcohol in a shorter span of time.

I agree. You're taking a huge roll of the dice for health issues over the longterm, and it's not just the liver. Stomach cancers and other stuff is much higher risk too.

    Yemermocha, you said it all.
Technically, Dogfish Head 120 min IPA has an ABV akin to wine strength (around 18 percent or so?), and a serving of wine is say 5 ounces. So 1-2 servings of wine would equate to 5-10 ounces of Dogfish Head 120 Min...so a 12 oz bottle would be the healthy limit for the day.
-The recommendations take into account serving size and ABV, for when there is variation of ABV, then one would have to extrapolate the recommendations to the appropriate alcoholic beverage.

-I.e. 12-24 oz's of beer with ABV from say 4%( likely extrapolated from beers of BMC, from which the scientists probably base their calculations from longevity studies and cancer rates) to maybe 6 or 7%.
-5-10 oz's of beer with ABV in the Dogfish head 120 min range (ABV in wine range to fortified wine range..12-20 percent?)
-1.5-3 oz's of beer that goes over 20%, and therefore liquor range (since we're thinking of shots as the servings..so Brewdog's Sink the Bismarck at 40% ABV)

Obviously, this is based on so many factors...gender..(woman limited to only one serving a day)..age..metabolism..bodyweight...rapidity of which the beverage is downed, fluid hydration status (is it a hot day and you're sweating..and thirsty? )....and whether there is already a considerable amount of food in the stomach...if your liver has remained relatively stress free so far...

I understand what you're getting at but there is a much better way. If you think you are at your limit (aka drunk) (or in your case over 50%)- stay up for an hour drinking water. The key to avoiding a hangover is sobering up and hydrating before going to sleep. Works every time.
