You can't just add the ABV% and /or number of beers without also factoring in the time frame. I usually add the abv up and divide by 5 to convert to traditional (for lack of a better word) beers. So 30% abv is the equivalent of 6 beers. Over a 3 hour period this is fine but if it's done in an hour, then I better have a designated driver with me. And usually if i am having 2-3 Barleywines or DIPA's, it would more likely be enjoyed in a shorter time frame.

Most people can metabolize one serving each hour just fine..anymore and a designated driver is looking REALLY good....it's not until well after college and into my 30's that I learned to pace myself more naturally...

Another trick to avoid the hangover is drinking a lot of water an hour before the beer drinking. Sure you'll be peeing A LOT, but this has helped me before. Drinking fluid afterwards with a little sugar can also help jog your metabolism. Might be why sugary mixed drinks get you drunk quicker..but they also 'burn' out quicker too...(Damn Mead!)

I'm hoping you are just using this additive method as a way of tracking your intake, like getting a ticket punched, because it really doesn't work this way. If you have two 6% abv (alcohol by volume) beers, you have consumed 6% alcohol by volume. If you have twelve 6% abv beers, you have still only consumed 6% alcohol by volume. You are insinuating that, if you keep drinking long enough, you will eventually reach the point where you have consumed 100% alcohol. Am I missing something?
Also, being a beer advocate is not about getting drunk quickly and avoiding hangovers. There are college sites for that.

Thank goodness for session beers.I can drink a reasonable amount without having to worry too much and it's every bit as enjoyable as stronger beer. More so to me, I get bored with strong ones after a few mouthfuls

The UK drink guidelines are 3 to 4 units a day for men and 2 to 3 for women (the equal rights movement hasn't yet objected!) ; a unit is half an Imperial pint (otherwise known as a sample!) of 4% ABV beer.
I did speak to someone from the Alcohol Dependency Unit and asked him where the figures came from.He said "to be quite honest we made them up" but in fact they seem to be endorsed by the medical establishment. What doctors seem to agree on is the wisdom in having alcohol free days every week to allow any damage to be repaired.

This post really wasn't about "not getting a hangover". I usually fall asleep before my limit is reached. Passed on the BW and fell asleep. Just a good way that I use to base what your limit is. Of course time is a big factor too. I started at 4pm yesterday and ended up at 10pm or so. You can also divide by hours to get an abv by hour limit. I am not a scientist just someone that doesn't like going overboard.

I don't really worry about ABV, I just drink a new beer a night, sometimes two if I am feeling frisky.

I use the formula P = C (1 + r/n) ^nt As long as I can still calculate the compound interest of a randomly generated set of numbers (usually I just ask people to spit out numbers "Mad Libs" style) I know I will be fine in the morning.

I had to start doing some math when I started sharing high ABV bombers with friends. A 22 oz bomber divided by four people equals only 5-6 oz of beer each, which doesn't really seem like a full drink, unless you consider the ABV.

Anyway, as others have pointed out the adding of ABV is not that accurate. If an average drink is 4-5% ABV at 12 oz, a 22 oz bomber @ 10% is approximately 4 drinks. A bomber of 6.5 % is approximately 3 drinks. A 12 oz of 120 minute @ 18% is 4 drinks. If your tasting is 4 people and you drink these three bottles, you've each consumed approximately 3 drinks. If your tasting is just you and one buddy, its averaging at 5.5-6 drinks each.

Of course it doesn't take that long to drink the 5-6 oz when sharing a bottle and crack open another bottle. Most people can metabolize about one drink an hour (less for smaller people, more for more frequent drinkers).
