I suspect it will be around a while, now that they've jacked up the price to $18/bottle. I suspect Mirror-Mirror is still around some places.

$16 at Wallaby's, $16.50 (I think) at Grapevine. But yeah, it's getting pricey. And I think you're right Mirror Mirror is still around

I mean I like Abyss as much as the next guy but does anyone think it's way overpriced for only being 1/3 barrel aged?

I hate to get in an argument/debate 'just because you barrel age a beer' it's worth ?? price. It was a solid beer, rated one of the best for years (for what ever that's worth) so I think we can find tons of other beers that deserve to be labeled 'over priced', I guess it sort of earned that price tag? Is $17.99 expensive these days?

I guess with me I expect (or can easier swallow) the higher price tag on quality fully barrel aged beers vs. quality non-barrel aged/blended simply based on the additional cost that it takes to make the finished product (i.e. purchasing of barrels, storage space for 6+ or whatever months, energy costs, yada, yada, yada).

No argument here that it's a great beer, and quality definitely deserves a decent price point but for me the price just seems steep. At this time of year (lord knows beer budgets are tight this month) I much rather throw my money at Liquid Brain, Tweak or the new Dry Dock Signature Series beers. That's just me though.

Yes. I remember thinking it was expensive at $9 back in 2006. Now I think of a $17 22oz bottle of minimally barrel aged beer vs. the $17.49 four pack of Bourbon County I bought last week. Needless to say I won't be buying any Abyss and I haven't in years. It's also more expensive than Parabola now, what a joke.

Do you buy Abraxas or Prairie Bomb? Also do you think ALL the Avery BA beers are accurately priced (at $12 a 12oz. bottle)?

Liquid Brain!! Ummm, what a deal but not the norm!
Dissident (sp?), Black Butte Anniversary and Abyss are my favorites. Never was much of fan of MM.

Dat Abraxas. Now we're talking! That's a non-barrel aged beer worth its price tag. Which is even higher this year from what I've heard.

Don't wite your $$$ on Abyss. Is it a good beer? Yes. Is it worth $17.99 a bomber? Oh hell no!

I wouldn't buy Abraxas because $17.99 for a non BA beer is too much. Bought Bomb! to see what the fuss was, overpriced. I don't like most of Avery's barrel aged beers and even the ones I do (like Uncle Jacobs or PumpKYn) are a little pricey. I think BCBS and Parabola are such a good value that I dint want to pay for other stuff.

Wallaby's still has 5+ bottles of Abyss at 15.99. I was also surprised to see that they had barrel aged Narwhal.

Here's my philosophy - is the taste worth the price? In this instance (one of the few at this price point) I believe it is.

It's probably not worth the price to most people, but each individual has a different perspective (on taste v. money). Now if 99% of people said they didn't like the beer and someone said they loved it, then I'd be a bit perplexed and maybe even judge them :stuck_out_tongue: ... but I get it.

Yeah, I was sort of playing devil's advocate. Not sure it's worth that much either, that being said I still bought 2 bottles. I've had some great experiences drinking and cellaring this beer in the past, so worth the chance. Personally seems like the beer has gone downhill every year and the price keeps rising  What can I say, I send too much $ on beer!

I'm going to do a 3 year vertical on Abyss today, '14, '13, '12 and see how that goes. This will pretty much determine whether I keep buying it, how much if I do and whether it's worth putting on the shelf to age.
My recent experiences have shown me that aging most beers over a year does it no good and in fact takes away what I like about the beer. Barrel presence and coffee chief among the traits I enjoy, but tend to drop off significantly.

Liquid Brain '14, BTW, fantastic. Get it, drink it, enjoy. LotLB: $14 for the 16.9oz bottle, $.83/oz. Less than $1/oz nowadays does seem like a good deal.

technically Abyss @ $17 for a 22oz bottle is cheaper per oz. But that doesn't include enjoyment factor.
