Shortly I've seen, but not usually 9 days. Maybe the real question is why did Deschutes plan their "launch" for next week rather than this week?

Not sure if I'm the only one who is confused, but are you talking about regular Abyss, or the variants? I though variants wouldn't be coming out until next week?

Never mind, I missed a few posts on page 1. Looks like it's the variants.

Me either. There's not a lot of perks to this line of work, and getting first crack at the occasional rare beer is one of them. I'm honestly surprised that 9 of them made it out on the shelf.

On a semi-related note, I called to find out why we didn't receive any today, and was told that a few accounts received cases over the last couple days because the cases were not properly "locked down", and that the "issue" had been fixed. No one else should be receiving them until some time next week.

Sounding like the shipping dock had space in a truck to fill, and tossed in the cases trying to be efficient.

What about the "sour-like" note mentioned in reference to the cognac version on the Deschutes website?:

The incredibly old Cognac barrels are from France, and according to Barrelmaster, Jake Harper, impart an interesting sour-like characteristic to The Abyss and is just around 12% ABV.

    https://www.deschutesbrewery.com/the-abyss-rye-cognac-remarkably-limited-release/

I get a tannic, sour-ish note from some wood-aged beers, and I'm wondering if it's this kind of flavor rather than an actual sourness.

I wouldn't say that. But way to shoot themselves in the foot by saying sour note on a barrel aged beer. It's all straight cognac. I wish it was thicker to hold the barrel more and offset a bit, but not complaining by any means. I love cognac, so it's nice.

With reviews like, "tart" and "good sour notes" it sounds like this beer (cognac version) will not age well but I guess we will find out. I for one will not be buying it. Regular Abyss has gone too far downhill and I don't think throwing it in a cognac or rye barrel will help much, plus B3 was not that great for the high price IMO...sorry Deschutes
