I use a chest freezer for fermenting and have a cheap thermometer that is less than accurate. Youguys have a recco for one that is worth a darn? Want it to be a probe style(not into the carboy) with the digital readout on the exterior of the freezer.

I have been happy with both the Johnson Control A419, and the Inkbird ITC-308.

The Inkbird is nice as it's a Dual-stage temp controller, meaning it can both heat and cool.

I have thenon digital Johnson temp control. I just need a thermostat that is accurate to read the temps.

This is an aquarium thermometer (Amazon) for about 5 bucks. If you place the probe in a 750ml bottle of water and run the wire through the door seal you have an exterior readout of the stabilized temp of the ferm fridge. Better yet, mount a thermowell to your primary, insert the probe, and you have the temp of the fermenting beer without having to open the door. These guys are surprisingly accurate, maybe ± a degree or so which you'll have to cross check with an accurate brew thermo. You can usually get about two years out of them.

i have two inkbird itc-308 units. incredibly simple to setup and the dual-stage is fantastic.

There's not cutoff for when you hit temperature, is there?

STC1000 is £12 delivered in the uk, I imagine it's about $15 delivered in the US then. You also have to wire it up. If you don't want to do any wiring then the inkbird ones seem to be the ones to go for, I think they are based on the stc1000

Naw, just a cheap way to check the temp without opening the door. From the OP's description that's all he's after.

I use a Thermostar with the long probe attached to a fermwrap for heating.
