Last night I brewed a stout and after transferring to the fermentor, I realized that I forgot to add the bigger half of my bittering charge at 60 minutes. I only added .25 oz of Columbus and forgot to add the whole oz of magnum. That brought projected Ibus down from 40 to 17. Now, I'm planning to boil the oz of magnum in 1 gallon of water for 60 minutes before cooling, adding on top of the 11 gallons of wort, and pitching the yeast. Does anyone see any potential problems or issues with this plan? Thanks for any advice!

My concern is over utilization due to no gravity. Am I over thinking this?

I wouldn't bother. Dryhop it when the krausen starts dropping

I entered 2 Dusseldorf altbiers into a germanfest comp 2 years ago. A split batch the only difference was I wanted 1 to have a bigger hop presence. I boiled an additional tettnang 1oz hop charge in a gallon of water and added it to one of the fermenters. Judges were quick to point out the harshness and grassiness of the bottles that had the extra hope.

Just a data point to consider. A stout may do a better job of masking some of that. I personally wouldn't do it again. I agree that dryhopping might be your best bet.

If you want to try this I suggest using hop extract (available from most hop suppliers). It would take considerable less water, may have to search for proper utilization rates. It might be better (definitely easier) to just add dry hops and call it a Black Pale Ale.

Maybe add something else bitter, like coffee.

Well shit. I didn't see any responses within the first hour or two after I posted this, so I went ahead and did what I proposed above; however, I lost so much volume due to evaporation that I only ended up with maybe 1/8th of a gallon that I split between the two fermentors. Hopefully, it won't make the beer harsh and undrinkable like what was suggested above. Too late to do anything now. I will report back with results in a couple weeks. Thanks for the suggestions.

I was given one of those Keurig coffee machines and it came with a reusable mesh screen cup. Put about 8 hops pellets in and ran two cups of water threw it. Actually made some decent hop juice and mixed it with some beer.
