Is it just me, or should someone who is adding new beers into the database, have to do the 1st review? Maybe it sounds petty but I've run into this many times now where I find what is a new beer in my market or simply a new beer period. I purchase it, and find that it's been added w/o a pic even and the user who adds it hasn't reviewed it.....sorry but it takes away from something I would have liked to do if I'm the first reviewer! Thoughts and comments welcome!

This has been discussed a fair bit in the past, with folks falling on either side of the fence. A lot of folks don't add beers, so if they go to review or rate it and it's not there, they just move on. By adding a beer that has been announced but you haven't picked up and reviewed yet, it is ready for the first ones who come to review it but never add new beers. Others argue as you have. Why does it matter really? The important thing is that they be added so folks can review or rate them.

I add pictures whenever I see one is missing because far fewer bother to add pictures than add new beers, due to the need to edit to the size constraints. Often adding a picture is not possible because you can only add a picture of a bottle, can, or labeled tap handle. Several local breweries don't bottle or can, and use generic tap handles.

Also, I believe breweries sometimes add their own beers without a review.

I would like this twice if I could. Well said.

The other argument I would have against requiring a review are the times I've had a new beer at a festival. I (essentially) would never enter a formal review on such a small sample, but will usually enter a rating so that I know that I have at least tried that beer. And the ability to add a one-off or new beer so I can rate it is useful to me in those circumstances.

I agree that whoever adds it should also review it, or at the very least, rate it.

I have no problem with someone adding a beer without a rating or review but I wish they would add a picture and description.

I agree - I won't review anything less than about 8 ounces. Plus when you're at a festival, you're usually trying so many that you get tongue fatigue and it seems to become a blur. I use the fest to sample some and figure out if I want to seek them at a later date to get a full pour to review.

I've frequently added beers without having tried them, as long as I have the pertinent information: ABV, style, release schedule, and hopefully a brief description.
Why? Because when I first started using the site I would go to review or rate a beer and for most local places it wasn't here and I wasn't quite comfortable adding it since I wasn't too comfortable in my beer knowledge.
Basically, I want to make sure any new users 1) can find a beer on this site without having to add it themselves and easily add a review 2) check out a local brewpubs roster and easily add reviews themselves without having to stop to add the beer itself.
As time's gone by, I've found myself adding less beers and adding more pictures as more pubs start to do canning and bottle releases. Also, going back and adding descriptions where I can.

I can't figure out how to add a picture when I add a beer. I'm sure there's a trick, but I don't know it. Usually if I'm adding a beer, it's a brewery-only local beer that isn't canned. I'm guessing no one wants a picture of my glass associated with the beer.

When I visit my local breweries, I will add any new beers I see on the menu (with pertinent info like ABV, style, realease, etc). I don’t always review them. I don’t even always drink them.

If I try something new for my first beer, I’ll usually review it. If I’ve already had a few before trying something new, I won’t. I don’t think it’s fair to be the first reviewer if you’ve already been drinking, have a tired palate, etc...

It's the same deal with the "Notes", you do it after you actually add the beer. Has to be a label or tap handle if not bottled/canned. There are specific guidelines that are outlined in the photo upload page.

Furthermore: This discussion has been beating the dead horse forever now. Back in the day you had to review the beer to add it, yes. Now people can add because they can just rate it, or not. It is better to actually have beer in the database if it is a legitimate beer. I add stuff when I buy them or see releases/label approvals. I add notes and proper ABV, Style, and pictures when I can. I do insane amounts of upkeep on duplicated ones and everything now. But I guess data integrity can just fuck off.

In my opinion, to properly add a beer, a person must drink it, not just hear about it's existence.
For example, on my trip to Sri Lanka two years ago, I added several beers. Even if the brewers website gives a small description of the beer, I like to try it, and add the beer style according to BA's style guidelines, to the best of my ability. The abv is sometimes also listed on the bottle/can only, not the website, as I have noticed in some other countries.
If the BA doesn't review or rate the beer, I at least hope that they have tried it, not just found it on a brewery's website.

I actually decided to be a supporter because of that though. I'm sure @dbrauneis has had enough work cut out for him because of me

I assume that you are referring to me (in part) adding the 4 Mile Candy Bar Milk Stout a few hours ago? I will get to reviewing it soon, but I only have so much time and liver tolerance, and I assure you, a photo has been submitted for approval. As an overarching theme, however, I totally and utterly agree with you.

For me, I only add a beer I have had, and I review it thereafter. Why not?

Added the entire beer list at a new establishment last week. I reviewed what i had. But while I had the list there I made sure the beers were added properly and accurately. Love this place and want to get people reviewing.

Sorry, but this just sounds neurotic. Why does it matter if a page creator has had the beer or not? If a beer from a registered brewery exists it gets an entry. Simple as that. If you don't like seeing listings with only one, two, or (good forbid) zero ratings under them you have the community as a whole to blame, not just the guy who made the listing. I've added plenty of beers from smaller breweries that only end up with a couple of ratings here, despite having hundreds of check-ins on Untappd and potentially having reached 1000+ glasses.

Several threads on this. I have added several beers only to be able to review them several weeks or months later. I normally do this when I see a beer announced as @bbtkd said above, but I don't have access to it. Also as mentioned above a lot of people will not tick or rate a beer if it doesn't exist on the site, so trying to help out in this aspect. I believe I have reviewed every beer I have added here, one took 2 years as I was holding it until me and my daughters had the proper opportunity to drink it together, and I believe I am the only one who reviewed it and will review it. Of all the things to be upset about, this isn't one of them.

Up until recently, there was a link to add a picture or update. Now it's a pull-down at the top (may be different mobile). The picture has to be jpeg, exactly 150x300, no more than 20.48 kb (so you need an image editor that can decrease the jpeg quality), and the picture must be of a beer or can label, or a labeled tap handle - no glasses of beer or just logos. These restrictions are why a vast majority don't hassle with it.
