The best are the bottle shops that let you pull singles from 6 packs. I have two of those in my area.

OP, any Trader Joe's in your neck of the woods? They allow breaking up of any six-pack, four-pack or whatver, so you can essentially mix whatever you'd like and they just prorate the price at a sixth (or fourth or whatever the whole pack is) of the total price. Pretty convenient assuming you have a TJ's and that it has a decent selection.

Also, Whole Foods here have a mix-a-sixer option for a $9 flat option from a select group of beers that usually are solid brews.

I get singles either from Total Wine otlr Trader Joe's. TJ'S pricing is great, but the selection cam be limiting. I have been trying to focus on summer style beers that I haven't tried (wheats, craft lagers, etc) but at TJ'S I end up filling out the pack with IPAs. TW is pricier but the selection is huge. And mostly the beer is fairly fresh.

I honestly find this odd as here in Ireland we sell beers as singles with a smaller selection available in case or 4/6 pack.
I dont know if I would have had the variety of beers Iv tried if that was was the case here.

Honestly I think its sucks for you guys.

Continuing the SN love, I got a bottle of Tumbler about a year after it was bottled, and well after it stopped being made for individual distribution. It was just before they announced it was coming back in the Fall packs. It was still quite good, and I was very happy with it.

There are no locations in the OP's home state, but if anyone reading this thread lives near a Total Wine (most locations in the SE & SW), they will allow you to break any sixer they have, even if it's not currently on the singles shelf.

I miss those. That was a fairly regular occurance for me in MA. Every third or fourth store. In my part of PA, its virtually inexistent.

I overheard a store owner once explain to an elderly patron who looked like she spent a good deal of money in the store that they typically broke up old six packs and used them to stock the singles isle and that if she wanted fresh beer to buy complete six packs. So I buy my singles at a different store.

Depends on the store. Supermarkets often have singles that are past their prime, but bottle shops sometimes are clearing shelves and inventory, and beers that can age show up on discount. Happy hunting!

The singles at Whole Foods, at least in CT, are usually new inventory. Wegmans as well. Believe it or not their singles selection is better than most, not all, bottle shops in the area.
I am headed back now to one particular bottle shop that I know has some 2014 Celebration singles. Thanks @zestd.

I usually build my mix 6 selection by trying to put things out there that I want to push sales in. Then when they are close on date, I take them and put them in a "mystery box" for super cheap. Sometimes like 24 beers for $20 or something. Usually sells pretty quick, then I have a constant rotation of fresh mix 6 selection.

"Mystery box" sounds awesome! It would definitely cut down on time making up my mind in the store. You just get whatever's in the box. Love it

Bummer thought this was going to be a BA Farmer's only type thread.

Singles around here are hit or miss. usually nothing awesome, but nice for making a local shelf variety to send out or take places with you for others to try beer from your region. Tougher when some beers have no dates though

I pretty much only buy singles (once in a while a grab a six of Sucks or Two Hearted)...I'm off of most bombers for a while (can't do $10+ for a 22 oz), unless I'm buying a case of Miller High Life bottles for when I need my car worked on

This. I only have one shop that allows it around here but he doesn't mind you paying the extra mark up on a single bottle. I prefer things this way.

Picked up a few bottles of Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale the other day in a local grocery store at about $2 a piece chilling in a reduced buggy with half rotten fruit. I guess the carton they came in broke.
