After striking out on Rusty Nail @ Fremont this afternoon, I stopped by Bottleworks to grab a Dogpatch Sour. I also saw the Against the Grain beers sitting on the counter, but passed on them after learning the prices. $17 or $18 for a 22oz IPA? I can't recall ever seeing any IPA in that price range. Anyone know why they're priced so high? Anyway, it gives the brewery's name a double meaning.... Cheers
The only IPA I've seen from Anchorage is Bitter Monk, and I think it runs about $14 for a 750 (i.e., more than a bomber). It's also aged in French oak Chardonnay barrels and triple-fermented. I guess what I was getting at is, do these Against the Grain beers get some kind of special treatment that justifies such a high price? (barrel aging, exotic yeast strains etc.)
I checked a prominent Midwest online store and they currently carry four AtG beers, none being higher than $14.99. Looks about $4-5 hike in price once it hits the NW. I'll skip.
Dont forget bo and luke that went for as much as $30, and the chicken shit i just picked up for $25... it has real chicken feathers, so it is worth so much more. But yeah, i hear you. brett the hit man hop was reasonable, and awesome... actually the cheapest one i have gotten from them. why is a bretted beerncheaper than their standard ipa??!
Crazy pricing. Omnipollo Fatamorgana was $16 at whole foods for a 22...that is the only one I can remember being that much...it's so good I almost bought it...
Doesn't Nebraska Brewing have an IPA in that range too? Not that another overpriced IPA justifies AtG's pricing, but there are no shortage of business models in the brewing industry, including the "test the price ceiling" model.
On the topic of unexpectedly high prices for beer, there's the $12 Westbrook table beer pilsner I saw on the shelves recently.
There's an extra layer of mark up involved. I assume that in their home territory it goes: Brewery > Distributor > Retailer Out here it's: Brewery > 12% Imports (the same company that distributes Evil Twin, Stillwater, Westbrook, etc) > Distributor > Retailer This also explains why Off Color 6pks are $15-17 instead of $10-12 like you find in the Midwest.
Westbrook Brewing Co @WestbrookBeer Mar 14 @WilliamWilberg @OPBeer nope Table Beer is a special project, not one of our brands
This, though I haven't seen Off Color for less than $4/bottle ($24/six-pack), and they all seem to be individually labeled for sale. 12% Imports appears to be the issue and I hope brewers catch on to what is happening with their product.
For the same reason Tilquin is priced higher in WA than PDX. ($25/bottle for 750s up here in Seattle).
