So I just stopped in at a swell little local beer shop I hadn't been to in a while and noticed something interesting. They appear to have opened up the cellar recently and currently have a couple Deschutes brews that I haven't tried that I thought I'd solicit opinions on. They have the Not So Stoic from 2015 and Mirror Mirror from 2014. Again, I assure you that these are not accidental old stock, this is a quality bottle shop that occasionally cellars releases and then puts them out after aging. My question is, are either of these anything special? Are those years anything special? Never had either one fresh or aged and I believe they're priced around $14 or $15 for a 22. Thanks for the opinions.

Special. I'd grab them. Deschutes builds their big beers to last. We opened an '09 Mirror Mirror recently that was better than it was fresh, & Abyss will improve for several years. Get on it!

I presume your mean "Not The Stoic". Buy both as quads and barleywines age well.

Plus the price is equal or less than what they are when they are first released. I'd buy em.

Deschutes used to put best after dates on most of their Reserve Series beers that were a year after it was bottled and might still do this for some of them so they should age well

I just had a 2014 Mirror Mirror...It was AWESOME. In fact, I'm diving an hr to store I bought it from this weekend to see if they have anymore. I recently had a 2015 Stoic and it was fabulous.....I'm sure not the stoic would age similarly well.

I meant to buy a Mirror Mirror in Bend last weekend and got drunk and forgot. Really wish they would bring that one back.

Not sure where you are in ID, but check any Rosauers or go to Huckleberries in South Hill in Spokane.

In Boise, I could probably find one somewhere, but might require a little bit of work.

You should be able to find it in Boise then, and I bet if you ask a store that stocks fresh craft that would look like it would employ someone is in the know, ask them and they could order you a case at a time. I used to do this with Huckleberries and Tacoma Boys- pay attention to release dates and about a month before it releases start inquiring about ordering a case of whatever through their distributor. They sell you the beer, so they're cool with it in my experience.

Was just about to ask a similar question as I recently stumbled upon some 2015 Stoic one of our shops recently pulled from the cellar. I'll have to give it a go now!

For what it's worth, my 2013 Abyss is tasting very nice right now. It has 100% improved from fresh. As for Mirror Mirror, I have had one with a few years of age on it. I don't know, fresh Mirror Mirror is pretty amazing, so that one won the context for me. It's all fun, and everyone is different. Embrace your inner curiosity.

I found Brandy and Rye Abyss at Brewers Haven a couple years back, wouldn't be surprised if they had some vintage Deschutes on the shelf. Home Brew Stuff usually has various vintage bottles as well.

So I ended up grabbing one of the Mirror Mirrors (2014) and shared it with some friends the other night. It was incredibly sweet and syrupy, far too much so for my taste. I never had it fresh so I can't comment on the change but it was very caramelly and very syrupy at around 3 years. Friends both commented, without knowing what beer it was and without being big beer drinkers that it was very wine like
