Aging a rauchbier?

    Came across a Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Weizen while poking around in my cellar the other day, figure it's been out there since 2011 based on my only recollection of buying such a creature. My question is simple - has anyone aged this or a similar beer before and if so, what was the result (drink it or toss it)?

    Invite friends, open and taste it, then let us know how it was.... :grinning:

    My beers never last that long....

    I have no experience that is helpful but I'd be interested in hearing what happens. In "Vintage Beer" by Patrick Dawson he talks about smoke being a preservative, so smoked beer don't quite have to follow the ABV rules of cellaring. Alaskan Smoked Porter comes in at only 6.5% and people enjoy that beer well beyond 5 years. This one has a little less going for it since it is a wheat beer and wheat proteins tends to fall out rather quickly. Looking at reviews the beer it seems to have some caramel/dark malts in it so it could end up nice.

    Thank you for the input! I am starting to look forward to cracking it open but have to work up the nerve first.

    Schlenkerla beers don't age very well. I have read Vintage Beer as well, and he said that all things the same smoked beers have more of a buffer against oxidation. Fastenbier can probably hold up 6 months max, and Helles, Marzen and Weizen should be drank within 3-4 months.

    Drink it, maybe it will be interesting. But don't review it or purposely age your weizens if you want to drink it like the brewery intends.
