Reading these comments has me worried I put back 2 four packs last year with the intentions of doing a 5 year vert and I just picked up another 2 today. It looks like it's split like 60% fresh is better and 40% saying aging is the way to go. They are already waxed and laid down though so I guess I'm in this till the end.

Don't sweat it. There are no wrong answers, its all about personal preference.

I would do the vert if you really want to. It would be interesting to take that journey. If you do please update to let us know how it was.

I don't have a massive amount of experience with Backwoods, but I have had a 2013 and this years version. The 2015 wasn't just a little better, it was much better*.

*This is only one experience, and there are obviously many variables when it comes to tasting/comparing/aging beer.

2015 was already virtually bourbon free imo, age will only make it worse.

For what it's worth, I had a 2012 recently and it was still very good. Bourbon was still there, although yes it was a bit more subtle. Even smoother than fresh as I remember. As good as fresh?...matter of opinion. But I would go ahead and enjoy the ride. I put several back this year myself.

I thought 2015 Backwoods Bastard was good but would probably benefit from a little age- 6 months to 1 year. Just a guess though.

I have had lots of BB over the past five years. 2014 was without question the hottest when fresh. That's a confounding factor in any effort to analyze the impact of aging.

I find it best 6-9 months old. Dat sweet spot.

I actually really like this around 3 years. A lot of coconut, no booze and sooth as he'll mouthfeel.
