Can anyone tell me how long a beer can sit before it goes bad? I imagine the answer would depend on the type of beer and abv%, but I'd appreciate any feedback. I have a bottle of 2011 3 Philosophers and a 2014 Old Guardian; I thought they'd be perfect for aging, but a friend suggested they may be passed their prime. Thoughts ....

Typically higher ABV beers, sours and BA age well, but also depends on beer. Keep them away from light and extreme heat. I like to age sours for a year or two (after trying one fresh) I like aging most BA beers for 2-3 years. Remember that hops, coffee, and other specialty ingredients(vanilla/peppers etc) may fall out over time. Many would agree that aging beer over 5 years could be risky, depending on the brew.

Thanks for that. I keep everything in a closet in the basement, so light and temp shouldn't b an issue. I have found that coffee fades over time (sometimes for the better). Also, I compared a year old Mad Elf to a fresh one... Fresh was better by far. I guess it's a matter of trial and error

Old Guardian will develop into a more complex and full blast of dark fruit with age. I would hold on to that.

Five years is a pretty common aging target for Belgian Quads like Three Philosopers, so that could be great now, but I remember someone posting on this forum that he had a seven year old that was unbelievable.
