East End brewery is releasing their BA Gratitude in cans this year. Does anyone know how well and how long you can age a beer in a can? I have only ever aged bottled beer.
Canned beer ages fine, cans keep light and oxygen out better than bottles so it should actually age slower.
Thank you, that's what I had thought but I also remember reading that storing higher abv bottles on their side could overtime cause the protective cover on the inside of the cap to breakdown and reveal the beer to the metal the cap is made of. Was just wondering if that would happen with cans and their inner lining.
My taste buds preferred a 2006 Ten Fidy over a 2016. Successful aging will depend on what's inside, but being in a can won't hurt anything.
Yep. Nice and smooth. Was given to me as a trade extra in early 2015 and I decided to just hold onto it until it hit year 10.
Cans are actually the best container for beer. Age them upright if possible, as their only real weakness is around the lid and seams.
This is THE key question. 2006 Expedition is amazing, but was it better than 2010 or 2011 for that matter?
That's the question I can't answer. I only had 2 cans....2006 and fresh. Have no idea what its like in between. I did the tasting blind, but it was pretty easy to tell them apart (not as much carbonation in the 2006). I'm not a pro at this so I don't do tasting notes. But I know for sure I liked the older one better than the fresh one. I would do it again if I had more patience. This one was easy since I got it with 9 years on it.
At least you know it's good for a long time. If you have the money buy a case and drink one every 6 months for 12 years.
Aging in cans is perfectly fine. Cans are better than bottles for the beer, it'll keep light and oxygen out better.
Would it make the wild ale better though with the aging since its a lighter beer, and also is there a max for aging it.?
I don't really drink a ton of wilds and don't have any experience cellering them, so I'd start a thread on the particular beer and when it's best. All I was saying is the fact that it's in a can won't hurt it.
