My roommate and I are cellaring quite a few beers that contain coffee/espresso and we are wondering about the effect coffee might have on the beer over various periods of time. We have heard that coffee in beer drastically changes in taste over time and might lead to some unpleasant flavors. Does anyone know about this?

    Cheers!

Generally, it will fade. Depending on the beer, type of coffee used, and amount of coffee used, it may develop some off flavors and a stale taste, but this will vary beer to beer. I've had some coffee beers that have held up better than others, but the general rule is to drink coffee beers fresh if the coffee/roasty flavors are what you're after.

Coffee fades fast. Drink it fresh or up to a few months. Dont wait much longer.

The only aged coffee beer I've had personally that isn't a shell of its former self is BCBCS '12. Had a friend load up on this one when it came out and it is still drinking like a champ...coffee flavor is still at full capacity.

Might as well start cellaring some IPA's while you're at it

You laugh, but Double Jack with a year on it is solid.

No way most people would pick it over a fresh DJ

I wasn't implying they would pick it over it. But it wasn't drainpour beer. Still very good, just different.

Isn't that the point of cellaring beer? To have it improve? Otherwise why hang onto something for a year+ if it could have been enjoyed more fresh and as intended by the brewer. I feel like cellaring has gotten a little out of hand. 2ยข I guess.

I'm aging some Big Bad Baptist, the coffee flavor is so big to begin with. Bottled in November and had a couple this month and they are still great.

Sitting at work, thinking about what I'm actually trying to accomplish/what I may end up with, by cellaring the SMS/KBS I was able to snag...

This varies. I've had some (BCBCS) that the coffee is completely gone after 6 months to a year and others (Wake n Bake) where the coffee is as fresh as a pot of fresh brew on a beer that is 4 years old. I opened an 09 Wake n Bake back in 13 and couldn't believe how much fresh coffee was left on the nose and pallet.

Drink them fresh, or sooner than later. Wont do yourself or the beers any favors by aging them.

I've noticed a lot of green pepper flavors from coffee beer that's been aged too long.

I prefer coffee beers fresh as almost all fade very quickly. There are a few that hold up well like Speedway.

I have a Carton Regular Coffee still sitting in my fridge. It's probably around four months old.

It's a 12% cream ale. I can't think the flavors would have fallen off much yet. Carton requires retailers to refrigerate their beers and I've kept it in the fridge since purchase.

    Has anyone aged this?

i'm one of the few who thinks that coffee doesn't fade as quickly as other adjuncts, but what do i know?

Had a '13 BCBCS over the weekend. Still holding up well. Much more coffee than the BASS we had before it.
