So I picked up a Firestone Walker Double Jack 22oz bottle today. I am beyond stoked to try this one out, but I was so excited that I forgot to check the date on the bottle. I got home and realized it was over a year old. Should I give this beer a go even though they recommend drinking no longer after 4 months? Should I try and go get a fresh one?

You should certainly be fine to drink it, but it will not be an accurate representation of what they were going for with the beer. No reason to let it go to waste though, as you'll at least get a sense of the malt profile.

Yes, you should definitely try to get a fresh one. IPAs are definitively not meant to be aged, and is not how the brewer intended it to be tasted. If you can get a fresh one, could actually be interesting to do it side by side to see exactly how the flavor profile changes...but expect most of the hop flavor/aromas to be gone and taste very malty

I'd contact the store to let them know they have way out of date stuff and perhaps see if they'll take it back. If they're not responsive to at least clearing out the old stock, try to get in touch with FW or the distributor as well.

Definitely try to get a fresh one.

Thanks guys! I'm gonna try to get a fresh one but if they don't honor my purchase, I'm not gonna let such a great beer go to waste.

IPAs don't age well in general. Once the hops fade they become very malt heavy and not in a good way. The quicker you can drink them the better.

It's a DIPA - definitely try it fresh, but with a year on it, the body will be a bit maltier. Southern Tier Unearthly also rings in at 9.5% and while different than fresh. I love that beer with two years on it!

Some people don't seem to mind IPAs with a few weeks or month on them. Give her a taste... see what you think.

You should keep it, get a fresh one and do a side-by-side. Just because someone tells you not to do something doesn't mean you CAN'T do it. You're not supposed to speed but I bet you've gone over the speed limit a few times and have probably even enjoyed mashing the gas pedal to see how fast you can go.

An aged IPA with a good malt backbone becomes a light barleywine over time. Fresh hops and dry hopped aromas and flavors will drop out first, followed by kettle hops and bittering hops. What's left is the malts beneath the hops. I was never a big IPA guy and have actually preferred some IPAs aged over fresh. It's all about what you like and you'll never know if you like a good rib-eye if everyone tells you "only eat filet" and you keep listening.

And actually, Unearthly (already mentioned) is a prime example of that because of its big, malty nature.

Do the experiment, have some fun and enjoy the beer!

I bought 8 of them in 2012 and have been sampling them as I felt the need to.
almost undrinkable fresh and for my liking still not all that great with 1-2 years on it. But I cracked a 12' last weekend and thought it was up there with some of the best beers I have had.

agreed with gatornlb report the beers. I personally like buying IPA's in pairs if there is a special one out there. Drink one now and set one aside for a bit. Did this with a few of Stone's anniversary and Enjoy by Ale's. Fresh the Hops are on point and really apparent. The hops hang around but as people noted the malts come out more a few months down the line. Brewing, and drinking beer is all fun for experimenting with different notes.
